  1. I had a problem with epoxy, and found that when mixing it on cardboard packaging, it dragged some sort of wax coating off the surface, and the damn glue wouldn't stick properly. Mixing it on a bit of clean scrap sheetmetal stopped that happening. For what it's worth.

  4. PS: My little brother bought the Excel 1.5 off my now 90 year old Dad. Well over 400000 on the clock. Suddenly went gutless, and nobody in the town where they lived could figure it out. 2nd gear on ordinary hills, etc. I suggested dropping the exhaust, so they did that, and, (loud and proud), the car was off like a rat up a drainpipe. The exhaust was given some sort of violent clean-out, and off she went. Apparently still going strong at 480000, after a recent set of coils. Bloody good.

  5. Hope you disconnected the alternator leads before you zapped it, even if the battery leads were off... Trust me, it generally bites you if you don't - something to do with voltage/current surge buggering up diodes in the rectifier.

  6. Especially helpful when the weaker wrench breaks, and sends a chunk of chrome vanadium steel into your face, and you smash the hand that was putting the tension onto it into something sharp and rusty.

  12.  @terrywade6172  Yes, I take your point. I was told that they had to shut the assembly line down for over 6 weeks, as the tolerances between engine and body were causing mucho damage. Staff had to be retrained. Poor old PT Cruiser. Much maligned car. I still like mine, but I have to spend quite a bit of money to get it road-legal again. Which is fine. Just gotta get the money together, this year, I hope.

  19. I like ém when they're going, and there are still a lot on the road where I am. My own one doesn't count - have owned it for 5 years, and haven't even tried starting it for at least 4 months. They're noisy old bastards. Mucho engine noise in the cabin. That's ok. It has haunted electrics, and I've pretty much given up, as my scan tool has vanished. Horn no go on first start, and ABS and traction control lights on. Second start, horn works, and lights out. Then doors randomly unlock, and so-on. Battery goes dead intermittently. Nobody's been able to fix it. Pity, as it was repainted not so long ago, and has no rust that is evident, apart from the hood frame, (surface only). A/C is not blowing cold. $6K for paint. I'll be lucky to get $1K for it as it stands, as it won't pass an inspection with the lights all over the dash...

  20. Toyota workshops. Ripped my ex off on her RAV4. The thing is still fucked, and they charged her $900 for 2 tyres. Burns oils worse than the fires in Kuwait but doesn't blow smoke. Most odd. Stupid car. It cost a shitload of money, and now it's basically worthless. My little sister wants to buy a Kluger/Highlander hybrid. They're not too cool - awful sounds from the engine from new - but it's her money. My brother have the V6 versions, and they're good. RAV4. Probably not. Toyota dealer service - definitely not.

  21. 5SFE? Seemed to get crappier as they were fitted to the later Camrys. Overheating, leaking oil, and just generally more unpleasant - never quite figured out why, but also noisier and more gutless than the earlier version. Old one did 400000km, ran a big-end massively but I drove it for weeks afterwards, (with the stereo set on max),, next one 350000km, then the nifty final one struggled to make it to 200000km. Just kept getting hot and leaky. Grrrr! Kind of the end of Toyotas for me, really. ?

  27. Didn't look like the bodywork was even finished, so hardly time to be worrying about an alignment... Was a junk car anyway, IMO. For sure an insurance job. They have it all work out down to the last cent.

  28.  @wesgregg6451  Maybe! In NZ, that car would be totaled if it was insured, and good luck repairing it and getting a legit Warrant of Fitness if it was a home job. They're relatively harsh here. Some still sneak through, though, on the old "Dial a Warrant" system... No need to repair such a shitheap - plenty of cheap beaters around for almost nothing. Wreckers offered a max of $110 for a running, legal Suzuki Swift, (2014 model?), believe me. I tried selling one to stop my ex getting it, and I'd just paid $8500 for it. OTOH, Bought a Grand Cherokee Overland for $1300 - one owner. High mileage, but FSH. Lovely wagon, but now gas too expensive to drive it.

  30. Apart from the obvious oil everywhere, the thing looks pretty clean for the mileage, but the pan looked to be pre-damaged. Surely they don't come from the factory like that? Mind you, it's a Jeep. I've had several, and they aren't particularly beautifully engineered, and the newer they get, the worse, etc., etc.

  37. I own a couple of Chrysler's wonderful products, and one has intermittent issues as you showed in the clip, as well as the Traction Control light coming on. Of course, every time I go to fix it, it stops doing it... Makes for great frustration. I suppose I need to buy a DECENT scan tool. And, yep, digital multimeters have beedn an issue for me as well. Even using the "prove, test, prove" isn't 100% guaranteed to show random issues. And, yep again, the first thing done is replace the batteries if I get wonky readings. I was always taught "trust your instruments". Sorry, but no.

  41. Man, if I worked in your shop, I'd be bitching to management about the phone ringing in the workshop. Bloody infuriating! Hire someone in the office to answer it - you guys don't need the distraction. It's one of my pet hates - phone noise when you're trying to work... Yep, I know it's good that it rings, and often, but not in the actual shop. Cheers for your always excellent, instructive and entertaining videos.

I'm not sure if the Ford Escape is the same as the Mazda Tribute V6, (pretty sure it is), Duratec engine, but a r/f brake hose collapsed, The car went left hard at about 130 when braking hard, wrote itself off, and hospitalised me. Had to be cut out of the thing, Cops tried to do me for reckless driving, as there were no skid marks, (on a wet road). 3 years off work.face-red-droopy-eyes All charges eventually dropped, and insurance paid out. Mysteriously, they lost the wreck. What a shitbox. There are still bits of that vehicle over 50 metres in the bush - spotlights, my cellphone, documents, and unfortunately I don't remember the incident, but I often go looking for that phone. 12 mpg on a good day, but it WAS fast,. Not the best car I ever owned, and I paid a shitload of money for it. It hurt quite a lot, in all ways. I still can't walk properly. Never buy a car with a name that starts with "M".

  49. Ford consumables part numbers mean nothing, in reality. They are just numbers they put on someone else's products. How do I know this? Selling bearings to a Ford parts shop for bugger-all money and then seeing them reboxed/rebagged into "Genuine Ford Parts" packaging, then sold at 4 x the price, (at a minimum). My best mate then installed them at the Ford workshop. We both watched the parts turning from Saeco to Ford on the packaging rip-off. I'm fairly certain that a large proportion of automotive brands do the same thing. I know that the vehicle manufacturers don't make spark plugs, wheel bearings, brake pads and air filters, but selling them as "genuine" spares is fraud.
