  5. I hate those crimpy things - they work for a while, then some alien corrosion , possibly electrolytic in action, causes them to expand an stop working. I know soldering is a PITA, but, it it's my car, anyway, I only want to repair it once. Gas door - we all know what happened. Gas prices, ok, so Mr Suction has visited, but sadly didn't have the keys.

  9. I had a Mazda Tribute with the same engine, and it went well. Grunty, but talk about thirsty. I was overjoyed if I got anything over 15 mpg highway. I have read that this engine is half a V12 Aston-Martin V12. See Wikipedia under Duratec. Might explain the good power, and rubbish mileage...

  18. Took my shitty car into a "shop", and was told that the gas-cap cannot cause problems. $100 for a scan, then told engine was worn out, Went next door. $50 for the scan. Fuel cap fault, and cam position sensor. Fixed. That was 2 years ago. Watch what you get told. Clyde Street Automotive in Whangarei, New Zealand, are the best. Fixed our old Laser, and it WAS worn out, but his fixes at 333000 kept it running up to 360000, and now the Tiida/Versa at 213000. Does NOT want to work on the PT Cruiser, but I know he'll do a great job. I'm gonna make him do it because he hates the idea so much. Thanks, Niels. Decent mechanic.

  23. I've had that where the fuse LOOKS good, but zero continuity. Frustrating. Have learned to confirm with a meter.

  28. I totally agree - use surge protectors, disconnecting the battery/batteries, the ECU, the alternator, and so-on. If it's electrical and plugged in, unplug it. Mig welders have a nasty habit of trashing anything electrical or electronic, the costing the shop mucho dinero to repair damaged components destroyed by voltage spikes and so forth. And it doesn't always happen immediately, so protect yourself.

  34. WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee HO 4.7 have an oil pressure gauge, but after 2002, they are a 1 wire fitting. Can't possibly work, so what was the point? Bring back the idiot light - my ex-partner's car, (Nissan Versa/Tiida - great car, I might add), doesn't even have a temp gauge - just a blue light for cold, and a red one for, "congratulations, you are now walking".

  40. I had a '71 Vauxhall Victor FD 3300 wagon. Yeah, did the same. I could wind it over by hand, and it would generally light up. Same with a Mark IV Fort Cortina Ghia. Nasty British cars. Should have kept them - they are worth heaps now. Woe is me.

  47. Possibly just Preventative Maintenance? Better than doing a tour of the country, or giving it to your kid, when the pads are partly worn, or nearly down to the metal. Supposedly, with the rears having already been done, at least it has good brakes for quite some time. Another thought - maybe the guys who did the rear brakes simply couldn't get that R/F wheel off, so made it your problem?
