  10.  @jasondashney  The NSDAP government in Germany did not just "want" to improve the standard of living in Germany; they set out to do so and achieved this spectacularly. Three years after forming the government unemployment had been reduced to practically zero. And this while the western countries were still mired in the Great Depression! With your question "Is starting wars that occur..." you most likely infer that Germany did so well because it "started all the wars". Let me tell you here and now that Germany, or its predecessor, never started any wars. The war mongers were always the Brits, French, USA, and sometimes Russia followed by USSR. Obviously you are not taught this in school, and with the mass media it's always "Germany baaad, the bestial, fire bombing allies always good". My parents became adults during those times in Germany and were married in 1942. Their experiences as related to me, and those of my numerous relatives, are totally at odds with what we are still told today. And that includes their dealing with police authorities. Fact remains, the NSDAP government did much, much, to improve the standard of living for the working man. The Autobahn and Volkswagen are only two reminders of those times. International travel, employee representation on the employer's board of directors, discouraging smoking, etc. are few of the other ideas implemented. There are dozens more. Compare that to what's happening now. Everything out governments do diminishes the standard of living for the tax payer.
