  1. What a great vlog. We were in that area recently and we loved going to Coningsby to watch the Battle Of Britain planes practicing. Such a lot of duck weed but much better than that dreaded blanket weed. Amazing information about the fish protection that is happening on the river. I always learn new things from your Vlog.   2. I had an uneasy eerie feeling just watching you pass through that tunnel, I literally had goose pimples down my spine. A very brave pedestrian walking through, I certainly wouldn’t want to be in that tunnel alone. That marina looked very full, it was good of the man to help you moor here. What amazing wildlife footage, I’ve never seen parakeets in England although I know they do breed here. I watched your vlog in bed before putting my light out and going to sleep, I hope I don’t have nightmares about the eerie tunnel. Stay safe you three. Lots of love.xxxx

  7. Beautiful vlog, I agree there’s a lot of interesting features on the Macclesfield. I’d love to live in one the canal side cottages. Zephyr was so funny when you tried to brush her. I’m glad my cat doesn’t do that or roll in fox poo😅. Thanks for the advice about the fur, I must admit I’ve left my cat’s fur for the birds in the past but I won’t now I know we shouldn’t. Lovely birds footage, I love the way nuthatches hang upside down. I like the way you show childlike excitement when you find the smallest insects that most people don’t even notice! Loved the poem and drawing at the end. I guess you’ll need a throw to protect the sofa from muddy paws, it’s beautiful. Take care. xxxx

  9. Another lovely mindful video. I hope you get to see the elusive water shrew one day. I had a close up adventure with an ordinary shrew today when my naughty cat brought me one. Thank fully it was alive and unharmed as 99% of my cat’s catches are. So after chasing it around the bedroom I eventually cornered it hiding behind the floor length curtain. I caught it and let it go in the field behind our house hopefully it will live a safe and happy life and not get caught by my naughty cat again. Those biscuits looked yummy and that plant on your boat is massive, I don’t think I’ve noticed it before. Thank you for recording these lovely videos for us, stay safe Vanessa, Zephyr and Mr Mindful. She’s just always been there doing here duty for us and she carried on doing her duty right to the very end. Such an amazing woman, I have no words powerful enough to convey how I feel. I hope there is a heaven and she is re-united with her beloved husband. RIP your Majesty, we are going to miss you and your beautiful smile.🇬🇧

  11. You did it, well done Vanessa and Alice Grace. The sunset shot was beautiful and the nature reserve looks a fabulous place to visit. I have quite a lot of ferns in my garden, Zephyr thoroughly enjoyed herself, wow that was a monster of a stick that she found! The flooding happened very quickly, I was on the edge of my seat hoping for a good ending! beautiful bullfinches and that friendly Robin, they were so colourful.   15.  @themindfulnarrowboat  I think it is always a huge shame when areas are cleared and the wildlife suffer! It will probably be years before the cooling towers are knocked down though, unless they’ve got ideas of what to build on the land because there’s another decommissioned power station at Willington in Derby and that closed down at least 20 years ago. The Willington cooling towers are still standing and peregrine falcons nest in the towers and the land is a haven for all kinds of other wildlife. They were going to build houses and a shopping centre on the land but it’s never materialised. Have a lovely day, thanks for your lovely reply. X

  16. I always look forward to Friday night because it’s Mindful Narrowboat night! Such a beautiful vlog, wonderful scenery and wildlife as always. We once shared a lock with a family of swans, it was terrifying, worrying if they were going to get squashed by us or the Narrowboat we shared the lock with. But we needn’t have worried they all stayed at the front and glided out as soon as the gates opened. I’m sorry to hear of the loss of your Auntie. It was quite a marathon, getting yourself, Zephyr and the boat ready for your time away from the water. Lovely journaling as always, the picture and poem of Zephyr was so touching. She’s a gorgeous dog and she obviously loves her life on the water. Take care you 3 until next time. xxxxx

  17. Another relaxing Vlog. I’ve been watching your vlogs from the beginning in turn until this one and I was intrigued by the title and wanted to learn more about why you choose to move onboard a narrow boat full time. I know that feeling of having an empty nest, I moved to a new house in a new town when all of my children grew up….and I got married again too. I live in a lovely house on the edge of the countryside but I still long for the simple life, maybe one day we will move onboard a boat full time too. I loved the long tailed tits, one of my favourite garden birds and the journaling and poem you did about them too. Thanks for helping me become more mindful. Take care. X

The cost of living crisis is hitting everyone, whether you live in a boat or a house, but it doesn’t seem fair that they are going to penalise continuous cruisers! I hope inflation slows down soon as the cost of everything seems to be spiralling out of control at the present time. I enjoyed your vlog as always. Take care all of you. X

It was interesting to see how you got your food delivered when you aren’t near shops. And your excitement made me smile when you found the marina did have the eco fuel that is so hard to find. The swallow family on the bridge was so lovely to see especially as they are so in decline, I didn’t realise their numbers were down so drastically, that was really sad to hear!   21. You’ve excelled yourself again Vanessa. You manage to find nature even in the most simple places. I adored the scarlet pimpernel and speedwell plants, nature even put complimentary colours together just as an artist does. The caterpillars and the amazing footage of the ants on the ivy plants was exemplary. The sunset was stunning, I’ll definitely be taking part in the competition. The Manchester ship canal looked very hard going that day, but you made it, you must have experienced a huge buzz when you got through the lock onto the much calmer River Weaver. My favourite part of this vlog was Zephyr breaking the stick into smaller pieces when you told her to. She’s such a clever dog.   24. Another great vlog, how sad it was to see the boat on its side! I think you do well to keep moving all winter, our boat is moored at Sawley Marina and we’ve not been out in her since last October as you have to go on the river Trent to get to the canal and it’s been on red all of the winter, as it is most winters. Ours is a cruiser and the river would be too fast moving to try to move her, we’d probably be washed out to sea! Your cooking looked good, Dewsbury looked a lovely little town to visit, how are you finding the north, Northerners are supposed to be more friendly do you find that? How amazing to learn about the humble mouse, how amazing that it is such a survivor! Lovely art and poem, I don’t know how you manage to create such beauty each week, especially the poetry.   25. @ thank you for replying, yes that’s right, it’s a fantastic charity. It’s a lovely marina, great facilities but being next to the Trent does have its problems, but at least we know the boat is safe as it can be as when the marina is in flood, (and the flood water has been over the pontoons twice this year,) the staff go round in small boats making sure the ropes are secure and that non of the boats are stuck when the flood water goes down. Despite that there was one live aboard boat that suddenly sunk at the marina this winter. The owner was at work, so he was ok, but it must have happened very suddenly as he’d slept aboard the night before! Take care Vanessa, I for one am looking forward to spring this year, it feels like we’ve had a proper winter this year. xxx

  26. Hi Vanessa, I’m glad you managed to find some water without going on an epic journey. Amazing old mill building on your journey. Spring is coming on the waterways, I’ve seen lots of orange tip butterflies and brimstones but no others yet. I loved the old Roman bridge, glad you managed to spot the dipper again and film it!   29. Fabulous vlog Vanessa. The train journey footage took me back in time to my childhood when we would go to the seaside by train and the train was individual carriages just like that one. I’m not quite old enough for steam trains though,😅 the carriages were pulled by a diesel engine. I still remember the velvet seats making the back of my bare legs itch! I don’t blame you for not risking the river, it did look very fast flowing. We’ve not been able to go out in our cabin cruiser this year yet because we have to go through part of the River Trent to get from our marina to the Trent and Mersey canal and it’s been in flood so not navigable in our little boat.   31. Gosh Vanessa, I had no idea that sirens sounded when floods were imminent! I was sitting on the edge of my seat during this episode! You really had to battle the elements at this relatively early time in the winter. The countryside looked even more beautiful covered in snow, the snow makes everything look fresh and clean.   37. Phew that was a scarey cruise, my heart was in my mouth some of the time, especially when Alice Grace was stuck on something in the lock. You made it though, your positivity is infectious, and you met some lovely people along the way. The scenery and nature shots were exceptional in this vlog, the autumnal colours are stunning.   38. @ Thank you for your reply. There has been quite serious flooding at Sawley Marina, where we moor our cabin cruiser Seren. We went to check on the ropes the day before the flooding was expected and the staff at the marina, do twice daily checks when there is flooding, they cruise round on small boats loosening ropes etc, if needed, so all is well there. We live in the Peak District which is a beautiful place to live and we’ve had a lot of snow and ice that is slowly melting. I’ve been loving the blue skies and frosty days, it’s so much nicer than the grey days that we get a lot of in England. Lots of love. xxxx

It was lovely to see Richard and his bat detector, how amazing that all of that noise is going on that we can’t normally hear and it was really entertaining to see Maggie and Zephyr playing together.
