And they did that multiple times, and then the people they "attacked" (and gave everything back to for no reason) offered peace (which they always wanted anyway) and Israel stopped starting wars just for fun - also for no reason. Well this has been a most diverting little trip down the byways of pure fantasy. . . . . .

Every war Israel has ever fought was started by their enemies with the intent of destroying them - eventually, some of them figured out they kept losing and it wasn't worth it.   34.  @dark7element  Well yes obviously, any nation would find such a retreat humiliating. Look at how humiliating Nato's defeat in Afghanistan was. Of course there are also large numbers of Russian speakers in those regions who want to be part of Russia. And the west engineered a coup to remove a pro-Russian leader in a country on Russia's doorstep - something any major power would be alarmed by. And Nato have broken assurances given at the end of the cold war that they would not expand eastwards. There's always two sides to a story.

Stop kidding yourself there's any kind of principle involved here.

  44. Iran had support from the USSR during that war, and given Iran is a larger country than Iraq, it's not too surprising they managed to hold out. And "hold out" is all they achieved. Even when they resorted to means like rounding up children and throwing them into the Iraqi guns.
