  2. Yes… traditional Chinese culture is still maintained in Taiwan while in China most of these traditional culture and morals got gutted by the CCP regime. The CCP basically wants to eradicate traditional Chinese culture they perceived as “weak”.

  3. Very informative as usual Lei. I was a huge fan of Hu Yaobang's reform. Unfortunately, as history have played out the "bad guys" (like Jiang Jemin/Li Peng) won, and the "good guys" reformist (like Zhu Rongji/Zhao Ziyang) lost and China turned into the state that it is today -- economically advanced but politically stunted and backwards. The fight between the major factions continues on today even in 2021.

  4. Very interesting. I agree. The CCP seeks to confront the US in the SCS not in the Taiwan strait. The CCP is essentially blocked in the strait and cannot easily maneuver but they can in the SCS. So if the CCP went to war with the US, countries like Vietnam, Philippines and Australia could get involved.

  12. Merry Christmas and happy hollidays Lei! Because economic reform requires political reform. It goes hand in hand. Reforming one while the other is stuck in the 1950s is useless. The CCP mentality is still stuck in 1950s mentality of control and stability at all cost, except the more they prioritize stability the more unrest and instability their policies create (ironic I know).

  13. Thank you for revealing this. This means tofu construction isn't only limited to buildings but to military equipment too. Make sense, many tofu buildings that are collapsing now are built within the past 3-10 years and it is certainly possible so are the military equipment. Sadly some people in Taiwan have no qualms about selling Taiwan out to the CCP in exchange for business and money. For those who are aware of politics in Taiwan knows who they are. They are the pro-unification stooges.

  21. As they say "the bigger they are the harder they fall". Mega SOEs are a terrible idea. The best performing companies tend to be lean and mean not burgeoning mega corporations. Why isn't Wall Street commenting on this? Why help your biggest future competitors avoid a cliff? Actually US economic thinkers has been warning against mega SOEs since 2012 but apparently the CCP's idea was to double down on crazy.

The CCP loves to present a so called "united front unity" to present "face" to the public. To have these power struggles be displayed in a semi-public setting means the knives are now out.

Unfortunately most of western/US media are all controlled by billionaires with business interests in China that is why you don’t see too many criticism of China on MSNBC, CNN, Bloomberg, etc. This gave rise to a lot of small or independent news or content creator on YouTube and on other platforms.

  25. Not likely to happen if they maintain their political system. Obtaining citizenship is incredibly difficult in China. Permanent residency permit is possible but for foreigners it has to be renewed yearly. Then there are severe limitations that westerners aren't used to. For example, freedom of movement is a privilege not a right in China (due to the Hukou system). Political protests and congregation in large groups are banned in China. Then there is the issue of bureaucracy and red tape. The Chinese aren't used to seeing a lot of foreigners in their home country. Then there is the racism factor, many Chinese are covert racists (if you think the Trump MAGA hatters are bad, you haven't met a Chinese ultranationalists). At least in the US, people are wary that (covert or overt) racism is a bad thing, in China racism doesn't even register a something to be aware of. For example: words commonly used to describe foreigners such as 鬼子 (white devil), 鬼佬 (ghost man usually aimed at caucasians), 黑鬼 (black devil, usually aimed at African descent), 阿三 or 紅頭阿三 (derogatory words usually used to refer to Hindu Indians), etc are commonly used, whether the speaker is aware of their derogatory meaning is subjective.

  26. I agree many Chinese who fled China during the cultural devolution years (1964 - 1974) settled in the US as overseas Chinese and they are the ones who formed Shen Yun dance troop. Chinese culture is vibrant and beautiful but during the Maoist years it was gutted to a mere shadow and pale imitations. Many of the intellectuals, artists, dancers, etc. fled China to either the US, Taiwan, Australia, Canada, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, etc. and elsewhere still maintains these culture. Right now many young Chinese are starting to reconnect and rediscover their traditional Chinese roots thru Taiwan 🇹🇼 but the CCP crackdown continues on to this day.

Instead they reduce their pay check by 30% and gave them extra vacation days off. So now they have government employees who is also Meituan food delivery drivers.

  35.  中田沙耶  Taiwan will never surrender their democracy to the CCP. Xi will be forced to invade Taiwan to prove a point and because he is politically backed to a corner by hyper-nationalism. Except if he did invade Taiwan, he would have walked into a trap — the Thucydides trap (Xi actually is aware of it, he often talk about it in his speeches). Once war in the Taiwan strait starts it’s very hard to walk back because if Xi walks back he would lose all legitimacy — it’s the end of the CCP. He either wins (at all cost) or the CCP ends. Even if Xi wins and takes Taiwan the damage to the Chinese economy and reputation will be staggering especially if Japan and the US got involved. That is why the best course of action is to back off on Taiwan and not start on the road to oblivion. But judging from his actions lately it is looking like he wants to roll the military dice on Taiwan.

  36. One major thing I want to point out is there are different kinds of debt — debt is actually good for a country when it is the right kind and right amount of debt. The US has huge debts too (over $23 trillion dollars) but US debts are performing debts meaning they are debts that are used to grow and service the economy. China has a lot of non-performing debts, basically these are debts that are useless to the economy and are just burdens on the country. According to latest report — the US has 0.89% (less than 1%) in non-performing debt while China has over 22% in non-performing debt as of 2020.

The power plants opt to shutdown and ration electricity rather than incur operating losses due to higher coal/fuel prices while unable to pass the cost to consumers.

  47. Most of the Chinese companies listed in the US stock exchanges aren’t real Chinese stocks they are called ADR or American Depository Receipt. When you buy a Chinese ADR you aren’t actually buying a Chinese company stock but you are buying a stock from a shell company founded in the Cayman Islands that represents the Chinese company. It is illegal for Chinese companies to list on the NASDAQ or NYSE so they use ADRs as a loophole. All in all it’s mean to con American stock investors who doesn’t know any better (or who haven’t done any research) and think they are buying stocks from a Chinese company when in fact they aren’t. They have no voting rights nor stock representation in China with those Chinese ADRs. They are basically used as an instrument for speculation or acquiring capital by companies in China. What’s disgusting is US Wall Street continues to peddle Chinese ADRs as supposedly “sound investment” but in reality it’s all one big scam.

  48.  @PlanetFrosty  their problem isn't just that but most oil fields in Russia is in the west while the cities in China that needs it are on the Eastern coastal cities. Ships are useless so they need pipes but the problem is there are no pipes going to Eastern China since those oil and gas are originally meant for Europe. So now they have to build new pipes all the way to China at the cost of $10-15 billion dollars and will take 3-5 years to build since they cover massive distance of thousands of miles.

Ironically China’s economy is now slowing down, trillions of dollars are wasted on frivolous projects like Xiongan City that nobody lives in. Xi’s ego is costing the Chinese economy trillions. And Taiwan is its own country — it was never ruled by the CCP and never will be ruled by the CCP.
