you're right. the American people haven't been represented in the govt for at least 40 years. Reagan helped make that a sad reality. but representative govt is a republic not a democracy. there's a difference. democracy has nothing to do with mob, or majority rule or voting. it has to do with the protection and enforcement of equal rights, of human rights and human dignity. as long as this is the intent and practice of society then you have democracy. you can have voting in a capitalist, fascist state. it doesn't make it a democracy. voting for your next oppressor isn't democracy. democracy is political and social equality. socialism is economic equality. you can't have democracy without socialism and vice versa. this is the reality. otherwise, you're exactly right. money in politics and elitist rule and privilege are ANTI-democratic!
