union "leadership" is part of the problem. the highest paying job, with the best benefits, I ever had was a union job. but MOST workers didn't trust the union. and the union really was shifty and corrupt. i was a union steward and I became LEGENDARY. people who I didn't represent came to ME instead of their actual union reps. why? because I got things done. I represented the workers AND the union contract and held the union leadership's feet to the fire to ENFORCE the contract! the union betrayed me and within 18 months I was GONE! union leadership is corrupt. dues are TOO damned high. union members DON'T pay dues so its national leaders can rake in million dollar salaries. so enforce your contracts, lower your dues and limit the absurd salaries of your union leaders and just see how quickly union membership rises in this country.

@ambulocetusnatans … that sux for sure. sometimes even a corrupt union is better than no union. but like I said; when union leaders stop raking in million dollar salaries and unions lower dues you'd see a RE-birth in unionization across the country. we could even see renters' unions and consumer unions. all are extremely necessary in capitalist economies to maintain some semblance of democracy and justice. personally i'd prefer an economic system where unions weren't required at all. where human rights and human dignity were inherent in society and enforced by law. but at this point in time i'll take what I can get.
