  2. Ukraine/Russia have been "cousins" since before the time of the Kievan Rus. Ukrainian and Russian princes took the same road to pay their tributes to their Mongol Golden Horde overlords for centuries. They fought and defeated the Wehrmacht together. Now, after 1500 years , a few Nationalists let themselves be convinced by NATO diplomats that they need to be "separate" from Russia. A separation mostly that favors NATO, and they have led their fellow countrymen to disaster as a result. Zelensky has to run around the world and beg, has to watch his army dash itself to pieces, has to have all of Ukraine's public sector salaries and pensions paid by NATO---essentially making him a slave. He has to do all this because what he is trying to do is fundamentally wrong; if it were fundamentally right, it would not be so difficult.

  12. This is a perfect example of why Russia started a new offensive near Belgorod region yesterday. A few months ago Putin said Russia would establish a 15 km "buffer zone" along the border to keep Belgorod and border towns out of range of Ukrainian artillery. Belgorod is too close to the border, allowing AFU to get close enough to use rockets and missiles. With a 15 km buffer zone, most standard artillery, rockets, etc. will not be able to reach Belgorod. That operation began yesterday.

  18. $400 drone cripples $5M armored vehicle. Even if not completely destroyed, it is out of action for some time and therefore with respect to that battle, it may as well have never been there in the first place. Not to mention the casualties (by shock, blast pressure, shrapnel) that also removes soldiers from the battle. Once this war is over, the world's armies gonna be looking at each other like Admirals did after WW2 when they said "no more damn battleships". Future armored vehicles will have to be designed with an anti-drone system standard.

Ukraine wastes their few remaining missiles and ammo for this while at this very moment they are retreating from Robotyne, meaning EVERYTHING they sacrificed the $20B NATO army to gain last summer is now back in Russian hands. The intransigence of Ukraine under Zelensky reminds me of that of Imperial Japan in 1945; even after two A-bombs, the Military wanted to fight on. It was only the Emperor who stepped in and said "no, we will surrender". Unfortunately for Ukraine's' people, there is no Emperor to overrule Zelensky and his Nationalists....

  20. There were no tanks or soldiers on that bridge, only an unlucky family. At least when Russia drops an S-300 on a cafe full of civilians, there are actual Ukrainian Generals and NATO mercenaries in the cafe along with the civilians. When Russia bombs a warhouse across from an apartment block, there are actual NATO weapons stored inside. Ukraine is no longer even trying to limit themselves to such...."niceties"....neither will Russia.

  21. From what we've heard on the neutral military sites, AFU has 25K to 45K allocated to this operation (not all committed of course so they can rotate). The RU Kursk Army that was there for months (and was about to invade Ukraine via that same path), maybe 40K to 50K. So, right now both sides are about equally matched in that area, which is why neither can push the other very much, for very long: that "bulge" has remained about the same size for 3 days now. AFU is probing out to try to expand, but those "fingers" always eventually hit a wall. The rest of the border is not easy to cross, mines and dragon's teeth been there for years now, so militarily speaking, AFU can stay as long as they want to endure the FAB guided bombs. However, politically" , Putin is really angry now so it is unlikely RU will do the conservative thing and just surround them and degrade them from the air. They are on *RUSSIAN soil so he will probably send however many it takes to force them out asap..."

Same in Ukraine too; Zelensky talks as if the $60B in US weapons are in his hands, but his tune will change if he never actually gets them.

  35. The video from last nights missile barrage is starting to come in to the military bloggers. The one from Dnipro was amazing: someone recording the skyline from his apartment in almost complete darkness, then suddenly the sky lights up, a huge explosion near the river silhouetting a smoke trail in the sky. Then another, and another...each lighting up the night sky and each at the end of a smoke trail. Then another explosion near the first, but not missile smoke trail this time. That means whatever the missile hit detonated. I swear it looked like that old game "Missile Command".

  38. Based on after action reports this week, Ukraine does not have much time left (which is why Zelensky just publicly called out NATO, angering the US); he is desperate and rightfully so. The "counter offensive" is a complete and utter failure; no amount of spin or propaganda can hide that fact now. The Russian juggernaut has begun to move and just as in 1943, once the steamroller starts, it only stops when there is nothing left in front of it to crush.

  39. Propaganda. NATO took the Aegis system on naval ships and adapted it for land, calling it "Aegis Ashore". Obviously an ABM right? Wrong. US said "it doesn't violate treaty because this is a ship-based system". LOL----now adapted to land (and fully capable of shooting down ballistic missiles) and they put it in Poland. Ukraine then elects a President that is pro-EU , which of course puts them on a course inevitably for NATO. Now that system can be put in a NATO Ukraine, mere hours from Moscow---something Putin considers a bridge too far.   40. It means very little. They called HIMARS a "game changer" too a year ago. ATACMS is fired from the HIMARS launcher, so the launcher Russia has been hunting and destroying for almost a year now is still the weak point. Just last week the latest version of Lancet attack drone hit a Ukrainian Mig-29 almost 80 km from the front line; its max range was previously 40 km and is now unknown. To reach further ATACMS must be in the sky longer giving AA defense more time to shoot it down. Next year this time we'll be debating the next "game changer"

  43. These are distractions. Heavy equipment moves by rail, not by road and roads are very easy to repair. As to the Storm Shadow threat, Russia has moved assets into Belarus to be able to react more quickly to targets in Western Ukraine. Most of AFU remaining air power is as far from Russia as possible. If our mil bloggers can report on YouTube that Mig-31 and Tu-160 are in the air in Russia, NATO has told AFU an hour before; this allows things to be moved before the Kinzhals hit. Now the attacks are coming from Belarus so there is no time to move out of the way.

  45. Only a few ultra-nerd historians can see it now; for the average "Joe' it takes years for historical perspective to be apparent. This war will be among the worst foreign policy disasters of the United States. The repercussions will be immense and will last decades, possibly even a century. In less than two years, Russia has obtained intact examples of virtually every NATO armored vehicle currently extant. Every anti-tank, and anti-aircraft weapons currently extant. Every artillery system, whether projectile or rocket based, currently extant. Most American combat drones currently extant. Not only that, the electronic warfare suite of NATO weaponry from the cheapest drone, to the most expensive missile are now recorded digitally for the next generation of Russian engineers to study. Only the US Navy hasn't had her "skirt lifted" to the degree the Army and Air Force has in this war. Russian weaponry in 2053 will trace their ancestry in propulsion, navigation, targeting, and avionics to lessons learned from the Ukraine war. Biden will be regarded on the level of Benedict Arnold in terms of how much of America's knowledge and intelligence resources he gave away in this ill-fated adventure.

  46. Wars always get nastier in their final stages and this one is no different. Every day we see news we could not have imagined exactly one year ago. I know for certain Russia will win because their history shows they'll endure TWENTY MILLION casualties in order to do so and I know neither Ukraine nor NATO can match that. The only things I don't know are what new horrors we will witness before the war ends. The Iskander that wiped out almost 200 people----most of them military, but a large number simply industry specialists (and Russian surely knew this)---a day ago simply echoes the massive bombardment of cities in WW2 where both sides acknowledged they were trying to kill the workers in factories. We are now at that stage of this war.

  47. One thing the last week has shown is that the rank and file of the West have no fear of open war with Russia. NATO's leaders would not follow a course of escalation that can only result in direct confrontation if they did not have popular support. Look at the plethora of new NATO equipment on display inside Russia: the few tanks are old, but virtually every wheeled armored vehicle I've seen over the past week is brand new. Canadian Senator APCs?? When has Russia ever threatened Canada?? Western analysts say this "surge" is to force Russia into more favorable negotiations, but when in the last century has Russia responded to escalation with capitulation??? At Stalingrad, the Germans had come so close to victory, they actually had the victorious battle patches made for Gen. Von Paulus' 6th Army. Those patches are still in the boxes in which they were shipped 80 years ago; never made it onto the uniforms of the German soldiers...."

  49. Looks like the amateur bloggers were right yesterday: This was Ukraine covering its redeployment from Kherson to Zaporizhzhia region where they were blunted two days ago. They could not move their main combat force from Kherson without risking the Russians just walking through there in their absence. They blew the dam to ruin the area for offensive action for either side. It appears the NATO-trained hammer blow is going to strike in Zaporizhzhia. Ukraine only has one army; it can't be in two places at once and if they split it up it will be weak and easily crushed in detail. The "Big Dance" is going to be in Zaporizhzhia (no surprise, it was either Kherson or Zaporizhzhia).
