  2. Probably, you would need to form them continuously for as long as you need them. Then it depends on what they're going to be used for. If it's a transmission line, it should be fine that just most of the line is superconducting. An MRI coil on the other hand needs to be a continuous loop.

Go back and listen for yourself, timestamp 5:55. He then stated germanium is not used over all. Which is true. The point of this particular video is not to discuss every possible application of germanium, but to discuss the overall industry trends for germanium.

  8. I'd argue the number of holes drilled is a cost driver. You can only drill 1 hole at a time, but whether the board has 1 or 100 through holes it will essentially take the same time to electroplate. On the other hand, boards will still often be "peppered with holes" because even without through hole chips, you need vias. All of this is of course context dependent, what the board was used for and which time period we're talking about. For example, in the early days it would have been much more common with single sided boards, which did not have through plated holes.

People in both the People's Republic of China ("China") and the Republic of China ("Taiwan") are ethnically and culturally Chinese. They obviously have a very different government, and unrealistic territorial claims over the other country. But they also speak the same the language, and share a lot of history and culture. You could for example argue that the work ethic and focus on knowledge is shared between the countries and is part of a more general Chinese culture. I support Taiwanese independence as much as (I assume and hope) you do, but you also can't deny that they have a shared culture and history.

  13. I'm almost more impressed with 193 than EUV tbh. I feel like everyone knew EUV would work, and the battle was always economical viability. (Then we perfected tin droplets which tipped the scale and the rest is history.) However, the sub wavelength patterning done with 193 blows my mind. Are we talking half the wavelength? No, try 1/5, and that's apparently before taking multiple patterning into account. Learning about this broke my assumptions about the physics of light.

  19. Intriguing. I did some research and found higher res images in a couple of ASML PDFs. "History & Future of TFH lithography" and "Chapter 4 1994 | 1998". In that image, the branding on the machine calls it a PAS 5500/700. You can also see the beam path more clearly in that higher res image.

  36. Don't blame Jon. Nowadays Youtube's algorithms will sometimes delete comments without notice or explanation. Even if they're not hateful, rude, controversial, spammy or anything else that you might expect a comment to get deleted for. Kind of tragic, but the point is, when it happens, don't assume it was done by the channel itself.

  38. After digging through the literature this seems to be incorrect. Isotopically pure diamond, whether C12 or C13 have a drastically increased thermal conductivity over a mix of isotopes. (Naturally occuring carbon is 1.1% C13.) However, the relationship is symmetrical and either C12 or C13 will do the trick as long as it's pure. C12 would be the obvious choice for industrial production due to lower cost.

  39. Depends. If you have a tube amp with 2 channel of 5 tubes each or whatever, it's not so bad. But if you have a computer that takes up a room and has hundreds of tubes, and a single failure can make it misbehave, it gets a bit more annoying. Especially when they all help to fry each other with added heat.

  48.  @ntabile  Apparently Silanna/Sapphicon has 1 or 2 fabs, probably low volume specialized manufacturing. Both in Sydney. Certainly not in the outback in central QLD. Building a fab there just because it's seismically stable seems like optimizing for one variable and ignoring all else. If Australia ever gets a semiconductor industry worth mentioning it will certainly be on the coast.

  50. This is true for all electronics. "Digital" electronics just means they work close enough to an ideal digital circuit that we can assume it's digital. This is not always the case though, case-in-point for your example of DRAM, the Rowhammer attack, which repeatedly wrote to strategically chosen memory locations to influence other locations in memory.
