Context. Most analogue circuits don't operate at a level where that directly becomes an issue. At mist you might observe it indirectly in the form of noise.

Well played sir.

If you want memory to be permanent, as in retaining it's state when powered off, you typically need to modify the properties of the material. In the case of flash memory, charge the floating transistor gate of a memory cell, which is done indirectly. In the case of a hard drive, changing the magnetic polarity of the grains in the material. These changes take a bit more time. For RAM you "just" need to charge up a simple capacitor (DRAM) or turn on a pair of transistors (SRAM) which means it can be much faster.
3
That's not a given, though. Boeing are famous for making planes doing more "whatever" than flying. Just look at the 787 for example.
3
Yes, hello. Are you here for your stitches?

I would like to know all about analogue sound chip FPGA bitstream shenanigans, if that's actually what they are and not just clever digital programming. You might be aware of Adrian Thompson's classic 1997 paper "An Evolved Circuit, Intrinsic in Silicon, Entwined with Physics". He applied a genetic evolution approach directly to the bitstream to evolve a tone detector that could discriminate a 1 kHz and 10 kHz tone on a FPGA with no external timing reference. It got there eventually. But the odd thing was that the circuit relied on cells that were disconnected to function. And when he tried moving the bitstream to a different of the same model, it no longer work. The genetic algorithm had evolved to live on one specific piece of hardware.

Oh that's not right at all. Silicon is considered a metalloid, not a metal. The part about wizards and secret runes, though? Spot on.
3
4:43 60 million airbag sensors sounds very low. That's even less than the total number of new cars currently produced per year.
3
It really isn't at all at the moment.
3
Redstone is basically semiconductors anyway.
3
Then it would be early morning in Taiwan as well, where Jon is located.
3
I've been here since close to the start (a couple of years at this point) and I agree with the assessment.
2
Thanks for another good video. It may not be for everyone, but the semiconductor videos are what I came for, and what I'm staying for.
2
Because he took a sponsor?
2
It would usually mean most valuable players in this context, and it's possible it was not even meant as a double entendre in this case.
2
@jurian0101 I suspect these videos weren't released early to patrons because of the urgent topic.
2
Oh no... a genericized trademark is a blessing and a curse...
2
This is already possible with Youtube. Enable subtitles, then click the little gear icon, click the subtitles/CC option and then auto translate, then select the language you want. I just checked that the option works, and it was missing the first time. It seems that due to a bug, the auto translate option is missing unless subtitles were already on when going into the options menu. But with that in mind, it works.
2
Maybe this style of video is not for you? I for one knew immediately that it was for me.
2
It'll come. He's halfway there.
2
We just have to learn to produce large scale synthetic monocrystalline diamond, and silicon will go the way of the dodo.
2
Most of that is likely unrelated to the physics of the operation. A Linux kernel here. An SQL database for keeping track of wafers there. And soon you have many millions of LOCs.
2
Super interesting to see what happens if you eat the rich without devolving into pure communism. It's almost as if capitalism works pretty ok, if you keep the markets generally free, but prevent the economy from becoming too top heavy.
2
A micro-meter (sometimes called a micron) is a unit of length, 0.001 mm. A microm-eeter (sometimes called a mic) is a special tool for measuring small lengths.
2
Thank you too Jon. Being able to dive into unknown parts if the ocean of knowledge and come back with a bottle of concentrated distillate is a rare skill. Personally, I'm hoping for a relatively percentage of semiconductor videos going forward, maybe at least 40%. It's an interest I already had before I found the channel and was why I started subscribed. Although most videos are interesting and i enjoy them all. And I share the concerns about burnout. Be a long distance runner. Although this is something you can probably judge better than us.
2
So it took 11 minutes before you mentioned that one word. Even though there were two opportunities to do it before that. I feel like it was a strategic decision to delay mentioning it. :D
2
@rockets4kids Well, I disagree in this case. I've followed this channel almost from the very beginning, not sure if you have. What you're talking about definitely happens, however when I've seen it happen, there's usually a shift in production quality and choice of topics etc as someone is hiring a team to do their research and production. That explanation just doesn't align for me in this case. The more likely explanation, in this case, is that Jon wants to both keep creative control, and not share his income with other people. But hey, who knows what lurks in the shadows...
2
How do you do, fellow serpentza viewer?
2
Six sigma with regard to what variable? I can almost guarantee that no fab has >99.999% yield for example. Certainly not for cutting edge nodes.
2
The mined stuff? Probably not. Synthetic silicon carbide does see some use in specialized high power transistors.
2
The organization known as imec, sorry, ˙ ımec.
2
@joefekete4384 Each to their own, but if he did that I would frankly unsubscribe. As a point of reference, when Thoisoi2 (a chemistry/science youtuber) switched to using a voice talent, a lot of people were clear in the comments that they didn't like the change. In his case, it seems like it was his own decision, stating that speaking English was mentally taxing for him. Nevertheless, the public opinion was clear in that case.

Note however that the video is discussing counterfeit chips from a wider perspective than die cloning. Recycled chips could also be considered counterfeit if they are if unknown source and not properly valudated. Such chips can have any number of problems like remarked to fake specs, pin corrosion, random ESD or other damage that's causing the chip to go out of tolerance. In a perfect world, a specialty broker would stockpile chips at EOL and sell them long term to military and similar customers. Of course, the market is too lucrative for those honest brokers to be the only players around.
2
That's exactly the point if the parallel with the game of go.
2
@christopherneufelt8971 What...? What I'm saying is that Asianometry is run by a team of one, a person by the name of Jon Y. Maybe a team of two if you count Jon Y and Jon Y's soul as different people.
2
Blame the website. It's not the fault of our dear deer. Neither is it the fault of the photographer, who tagged it correctly on the AP image marketplace.
2
It's either a money printer or a money incinerator. There's no in-between.
2
That last point is interesting. One of several possible explanations is that it's low-key a compromise for acknowledging the sovereignty of Taiwan and Hong Kong. Although those countries are ethnically Chinese, they probably don't want to be seemingly lumped together with PRC.
2
@takingbacktheplanet Heh. Maybe if Lake Superior dries up.
2
You say that like it's a bad thing. But check his video on Wagyu beef. Do you think THAT video mentions TSMC? Of course it does.
2
That "when" is a pretty big "if".
2
Here's the conspiracy theory as to why he added that note. As Nara deer himself, he's tired of the prejudiced view that the deer in Nara region like to bump into people to make them drop food on the ground that they can steal. So he's trying to shift the focus to seagulls instead... Did I btw mention that most Nara deer are law-abiding citizens, who are even known to wait by red lights before crossing the road?
2
Another excellent video to scratch that etch. Now we wait for the DRAM comments. :D
2
I have to ask. Are you by any chance a dog sitting on a chair in the middle of a room that's engulfed in flames?
2
What do you mean by the last remark? Do you find Lex too "autistic" somehow?
2
@Shaun.Stephens so no humor allowed? Each to their own I guess.
2
Never remember hearing about that, no. I know about opamps and the 555 timer but not the opamp 555 timer. 🤔
2
@JohnnieWalkerGreen Kind of? They're designed to be comparators and probably wouldn't make very good opamps because they're too sensitive.
2
Karl or Groucho?
