  7.  @dhvanitdesai1044  FPGAs are great if you need the full reconfigurability. However, this comes at the price of a speed and power use overhead for each logic gate. Thus if your work comes down to repeatedly performing tensor multiplication at large scale (as in the case of a typical neural network) a more or less specialized chip is preferable.

  12. The tracing was done manually originally. Paper strips on a transparent sheet in 2x or higher scale. Then focused down transfered to a photographic film in 1x scale. The etching was done similarly today: photoresist on top of copper laminate, which was selectively exposed by the photographic film from the previous step. Etch the non-exposed photoresist using a base, then the copper using a solution like ferric chloride.

  28.  @Bomkz  Ok, I get your perspective. However. Fundamental physics is important, however, I can easily imagine an alternate timeline where the development was 2-4 times slower. In this timeline, the collective economic interests of the world got complacent and didn't decide to plough in the ginormous R&D investments that it took to get to where we are today. In my view, what happened after WW2 was much more pivotal for the world of electronics.

  29.  @pizzablender  if only companies didn't inflate (or should I say deflate) the numbers. Those numbers have no real relation to feature size at this point, which is why some people have taken to calling them eg N5 instead of 5 nm. (The smallest feature size in N5 is around 30 nm.)

  37. What was the context of the question on Physics SE? Diamond production or why 2.45 GHz is used in general? If some other frequency was found to be orders of magnitude more effective for this purpose somehow, I'm sure you could solve the regulatory issue. Apply for a special license and/or build a giant faraday cage around the equipment. If there's a will (and money to be made) there's usually a way.
