@donparky1812 Can Mainland Chinese people choose their ruling party? If you live in another part of China, you can.
2
Beautiful story. Thanks SCMP.
2
Assange is a computer hacker. If he had done the same thing in China, he would be imprisoned or (most likely) dead. And all his supporters will be systematically silenced as well. SCMP should be more concerned about the freedom of press in China/Hong Kong instead of USA.
2
They don't need to know the bill in details. They know that the Chinese judicial system is unreliable, non-transparent and basically a tool for the communist party. That's enough.
2
@梅花MH I support Taiwan. I strongly believe that Taiwan is a part of China. In fact, Taiwan is the proof that freedoms and democracy work for Chinese (Taiwanese are, by definition, Chinese)

These are jobs designed for robots. Why doesn't China build them? Did China ship too many microchips to the United States?
1
I don't see Carrie Lam was committed to the Hong Kong people. The botched extradition bill was a prime example.
1
Chinese government doesn't want its population to travel to Canada.
1
Hong Kong is between 176 and 178.
1
China still support Russia even at this barbaric stage. As a Chinese, it is extremely shameful.
1
Instead of the government giving subsidy to the mom, it should be the Dad who is giving the subsidy to the mom.
1
Thank you for the NYPD police chief for standing up for the community. When will the Hong Kong police stand up for the community instead of being a tool for the government?
1
@Evolutionism Is Anti-Science Lie Hong Kong people were not allowed the right to vote before 1997 due to the tremendous pressure by Beijing put on the British government. In fact, Beijing threatened to invade Hong Kong should democracy be declared. Recently declassified British documents have revealed the truth.
1
@EntropyIsNecessary The social unrest was over at the end of 2019. People started leaving in 2020. Of course, the COVID LOCKDOWN is another factor. Hong Kong population is declining for the first time since WW2.
1
@TeeHee-vo1bn Hong Kong, under British rule, didn't have democracy due to strong opposition from the Chinese government. In fact, Premier Zhou Enlai threatened to invade Hong Kong should Britain granted Hong Kong democracy. This is not fake news. These were declassified official documents from the British government. There's no chance Britain can defend Hong Kong from the Chinese invasion. Do you agree with Beijing?
1
Blame it on the Australia who stop supplying the coal to China.
1
It was supposed to be this way.
1
The issue that caused the discussion between Xi and Trudeau was Chinese interference of the Canadian election in 2019. This is a serious matter. Canadians need to know what the conversation is about.
1
@happymelon7129 If someone committed war crimes in Iraq, send a complaint to ICJ. They will look into it.
1
@happymelon7129 In the meantime, Putin should be arrested once he set foot on foreign countries.
1
@happymelon7129 In the meantime, Putin should be arrested as according to the law.
1
@Dory404 Why not charge her if she's indeed responsible?
1
@Dory404 The Hong Kong government said they have no evidence she received foreign money. How do you know she received foreign money?
1
@laichuonkui69 The Canadian truck drivers are allowed to vote for their leaders of the country. You mean Hong Kong people should be given the same opportunity?
1
@Bk6346 Brittain was trying to introduce democracy to Hong Kong in the late 1950s and 1960s. However, it was bitterly opposed by mainland China. In fact, Beijing threatened to militarily invade Hong Kong should the Brits dared to do so. Brittain was in no position to defend Hong Kong should China invade. These were no speculation. These were classified British government documents unsealed in the 2010s. China didn't dispute it, so we know it's the truth.
1
@bopian8913 If she is in Japan or in other western countries, she will have to right to vote for the government, as well as enjoying freedom of speech and the right to be voted (no more patriots of the communist party only). She obviously won't be thrown into jail. Are you implying Hong Kong people should do the same thing?
1
That means China and Hong Kong governments know nothing about democracy
1
Sleeping with a communist dictatorship is 10 times worse than United States
1
@sssfff That's an astounding number. Thanks for sharing. Did the Hong Kong government say anything about these?
1
Sl Mi There is no free speech in China.
1
There are Chinese police stations in many countries. USA is not alone. China is a powerful country.
1
共產黨下是沒有人性的。
1
Canada has been harassed and bullied by the Chinese government for many years. As a Chinese Canadian, we feel so shameful what China has done.
1
@user-gh9ow2mw2w Sri Lankans can vote for the government. Hong Kong people can't. This is the reason why. Hong Kong population is not as high as Sri Lanka.
1
@user-gh9ow2mw2w Hong Kong population density is 17000 per square km. Columbo, the capital of Sri Lanka, has a population density of 13500 per square km. So it is fairly comparable. Why the Sri Lankans are entitled to free dental care? Because they voted and chose a government that cares for them. Should Hong Kong people have a say in their government?
1
@randomname931 What about internet censorship?
1
It is front page news in Toronto.
1
@Anakborneo-nh7nh China should be proud of being a powerful country with a great economy. But if it can not recognize Taiwan's freedoms and democracy, there's no peaceful reunification.
1
The Trade Department of Hong Kong spent $80million as BLACK MONEY to persuade US lawmakers not to sanction Hong Kong. Isn't it an example of interference on other countries? Why didn't Beijing comment on it?
1
@lubovnyandega1693 How do you know that? Are you working for the CiA, or are you working for Putin?
1
@chenchen806 Nobody congregated on the beach. The whole province is shut down. The situation is serious.
1
@bl5608 I agree with you. 1 country 2 system is needed. China had promised Hong Kong that it could elect its leaders, had freedoms of protest, freedom of speech, etc. In reality, Hong Kong people can not elect their leaders, newspapers are closed, and protests such as June 4th are not allowed. Taiwanese people have seen it all in Hong Kong. Studies found that only 2 percent of Taiwanese people would favor communist rule. Do you know why?
1
@bl5608 Hong Kong people was NEVER able to vote for the CE. And you know that. The yellow fever was caused by mismanagement of the CE, and she has already apologized for it. Why did Hong Kong people get punished by her mistakes?
1
@My Account China didn't contact his relatives to announce the sanctions. China contacted his relatives trying to dig up dirts for him. Check the news please. It is up to you to decide what China did was right or wrong.
1
@myaccount8575 I am also a Chinese Canadian with relatives in Hong Kong.
1
此地不留人,自有留人處。
1
@ganboonmeng5370 According to the South China Morning Post of Hong Kong, 99% of the emigrated are not regretting leaving Hong Kong.
1
@canto_v12 On the same report, 99 percent of them do not want to return to Hong Kong. Is there a reason why?
1
The election is a joke
1
Putin has killed or imprisoned all his major opponents already. The election is a joke. Can Sunak do what Putin did?
