The OP claims it was withheld economic assistance from Kiev that motivated the Donbas region to try to secede. I say it was inspired by events in Crimea. Yanokivich leaving might have led to the unrest in Crimea (real or astroturfed) and the subsequent referendum (mid march 2014) and the unrest in Donetsk and Luhansk (beginning april) that followed was inspired by these events in Crimea
