I want to be a nomad so bad! I’ll be 68 this year so watching all these 70+ women living the life gives me hope that one day I will be able to.

This is the second video I’ve seen today where they used a toy kitchen in their mini van. Such a clever idea.

Carol - Thank you so much for being an advocate and sharing the stories of unhoused people. This is totally unacceptable in the supposedly “greatest country on earth”. I hope Jamie gets housing soon.
61
Carol - you definitely wouldn’t have been out of line to say that. He was out of line. He chose to camp so close and certainly could have moved farther away. I once camped at a private campground that allowed people to blast their music. I didn’t like it so guess what? I never camped there again.

I follow a couple, Snow and Curt, who are traveling the world in their Sprinter van. They put that 3M film on their windows. Several months ago, someone tried to smash a window during the night but the film held and they were able to chase the person off.
43
Ever been to Hawaii? Elderly people are revered and treated with respect. They are almost always addresses as Mr or Ms.
41
Another tip is making sure you keep your tires properly inflated. That can also affect mileage.
39
You’re right about social security not even beginning to keep pace with increased costs. I’m trying to figure out how I’ll spend the $15 raise I’ll have on my SS check.
34
People who say “Just move” act like that is easy to do. It’s expensive to move - even if moving across town.
26
I think you handled it perfectly but how scary!!! This reminded me of a time I was shopping during the holidays. The parking lot was packed! I saw someone getting ready to leave so I put my blinker on and waited. Well, it took her over five minutes to finally start backing out. Once she was gone, I started turning into the space when this car comes roaring up, the driver wildly honking her horn and waving her arm to try to stop me from pulling in. I just looked at her and finished parking. I couldn’t believe she thought she could just take this space even though I had been waiting and was already pulling into it. Some people.

@elizabethcalef6225 - Not all landlords are bad. I was a very good landlord. The only time I kept a security deposit was on my last tenants who caused $1000s in damage. I could have sued them for the additional damages but I didn’t.
20
The thing is, we can afford to do both. Just certain people in congress don’t want to help the working class.
20
@noreenn6976 - This. Landlord-tenant laws vary from state to state; even cities can have different laws. It can be very difficult - and expensive - to evict someone.
20
Happy, Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas, Carol. Thanks for all you do to shed light on the struggles many are facing. Many blessings to you in 2025!

Thanks for putting together this video, Carol. These are troubling times and I, too, fear it’s only going to get worse. I’ve always been hyper-vigilent. Once, when attending a seminar at a hotel with a coworker, she thought it was silly that I looked in the elevator before stepping into it. I said better silly than dead.
18
I really like these old Toyota RVs. This one is gorgeous!
16
I’m glad you made this video, Carol. I’m keep hoping I’m going to convince my husband to become a nomad. I’d love to spend winter in a warmer climate.
15
This is totally inexcusable. I have a Facebook friend who used to live in an RV in San Diego. She shared horror stories of vehicle getting towed with all their belongings and the owner’s left with nothing.
12
I’m so sorry to hear this, Kate. I hope you find Ginger.
12
What a great plan. When you mentioned having a residential but a bit wider is a good idea. You never know what the future holds so having a wider door and an accessible bathroom is a good idea.
12
I agree. My son had one and I rode in it once. I was nervous.
11
I can certainly understand your hesitancy to go around crowds of people, Carol, but here’s my thought. If we give into our fear, then these evil people win. Because of certain events in my childhood (that left me with PTSD), I have always been hyper- vigilant. I also listen to my intuition. If something doesn’t feel right; if things seem “off”, I leave. I will continue to remain this way but I won’t shut down my life. And to answer your question, I do think, overall, that nomads are safer out in remote areas than in the city.

@ - That was a wonderful opportunity and to come out of it with the money to buy a home free and clear made it even better! Congratulations!

Thank you, Carol, for highlighting the plight of so many struggling families. I live in a very rural part of eastern Oregon. I know we have homelessness here but due to the attitudes of some people, I think they try to keep a low profile. When a group came together to open a warning station here (it can get down to 0° here in winter), the opposition was unbelievable. Due to the actions of a few business owners, the station wasn’t able to open one year.

What a unique shape and absolutely gorgeous interior! Thank you for your service, Shannon! My son and daughter-in-law are both retired military (my son is medically retired and my DIL just this month retired from AGR full time in the guard (23 years). They have gone on a few trips sponsored by ex-military groups. Those programs are so amazing. For anyone interested, there are those special locks that you can get to protect all the doors on a van. They’re great for when you are away from the van.
9
I don’t understand people who create messes and then just leave it. As a child, when my family camped (we always boondocked), my dad would put us to work Immediately if the campsite was a mess. We always left the area cleaner than we found it. I don’t know what the solution is. You can’t make people care if they don’t want to.
9
I owned two rental homes a few years ago and background checks are essential. However, those checks don’t tell you if the person/people are slobs/destructive. My last tenants lived in the house for just under three years. They caused $1000s in damage. I like the idea of creating intentional co-housing for senior women. The process to accept someone would be more involved than just screening a potential tenant.
9
Her van is truly amazing!
8
@ajf5823 - I haven’t been able to convince my husband.
8
Same with me.
7
Can you start a Go Fund Me for them?
7
This is terrible and there is no excuse! My son received a traumatic head injury when on deployment to Iraq. His unit was in Kuwait at the time waiting to move into Iraq. My son had to be helicoptered out to a Kuwaiti hospital. When he filed for disability, he was told by the VA that they didn’t have the records and he would need to contact the hospital in Kuwait to get them. How in the world was he supposed to do that? He finally contacted one of his senators. She got things moving. My son was given a new person (I forget the title) to help him navigate the VA. Guess what, she actually found the “missing” records in the VA system. He finally got his disability after fighting the VA for about seven years. That’s the trick. You have to keep fighting. They depend on a certain number of Vets giving up after being turned down the first time. Same with each subsequent denial. Keep fighting, Arlene and thank you for serving.

I probably wouldn’t ever spend that much money on a park model. For $150,000 and $950 a month, I’d buy a plot of land and build a tiny house.
7
You have a very cozy set up, Helen.
6
I had contact with her a few days ago so I know she’s OK. I probably would have texted her or left a message on her phone.
6
What a wonderful story. Kind of reminds my of my late father and my stepmother. She had never camped before meeting my dad. He not only got her into camping, he taught her to ride a motorcycle. For their honeymoon (both were in their 40s), they each rode a motorcycle from Seattle to S California. Later, they would live in a tipi for several months on land they bought.
6
When you save a dog, they will be loyal for life. My late ex-husband rescued a German Shepherd who had been chained up for years. Rumbler knew he had been saved and he never wanted to be out of sight of my ex. He would cry if he could see my ex but not get to him.
6
What a great idea to find truck stops along the route and prearrange being able to stay!
6
Thank you, Carol. I needed this reminder. Between my husband recently being diagnosed with cancer and now I’m dealing with some kind of problem with my kidneys, I have let fear and anxiety take control. I’m 68 and have been worrying my life will be over before I’ve lived my dreams. Years ago, I realized that, no matter the circumstances, we always have a choice. We always have the choice to choose peace and contentment. I just forget sometimes.
6
Exactly. Usually, the cost of the storage fees ends up being more than the value of what is being stored.
6
@kookietherapy9398 - I have a travel trailer. But, it’s all complicated.
6
@ - Yes. The other video is by Serene and Simple Life. The woman even plumbed the sink!
6
Oh my goodness, Carol. How frightening! It was probably just some immature, inebriated jerks with nothing better to do. I hope they are caught. That poor woman. Along with her window, her sense of security has also been shattered. Sending healing vibes her way.
6
I wish I was ready to buy! Wow!
6
No one who didn’t create engage in the violence has been charged.
5
@ - I doubt we’ll get even that.
5
@ - Family leave, I believe, is only 12 weeks a year and, if a company has under a certain number of employees I believe the rules are different. Here’s more info: Employees are eligible for leave if they have worked for their employer at least 12 months, at least 1,250 hours over the past 12 months, and work at a location where the company employs 50 or more employees within 75 miles. Whether an employee has worked the minimum 1,250 hours of service is determined according to FLSA principles for determining compensable hours or work.
5
It sad that most states don’t have rent control. Here in Oregon, landlords are only allowed to raise the rent each year by a set amount. Currently I believe it is 10%. Even that much, however, is difficult for many seniors. Greed is destroying this country. And, not to create an argument, but elections have consequences. The massive tax cuts for the wealthy back in the previous administration, were permanent where as the modest tax cuts for the working class were temporary and have already expired.
5
Wow, Carol, I’m impressed that you can drive 500 miles a day. A few years ago I had no choice but to drive almost 500 miles in a day. Fortunately, I was headed home so I could just collapse for a few days once I got there. However, it took my back a few weeks to recover. Glad you and Lindy got onto smoother ground.
5
Open carry laws are ridiculous. If I’m somewhere and a person walks in with a weapon, how am I Yo know if he’s a “good guy” or a “bad guy”? If ever that happens, I leave and I let the management of the business know why I’m leaving.
