The calculus of war is grim business. COST 180 KIA + 260 POW + one destroyer and a dozen small craft GAINED Keeping Tirptiz bottled until sunk 1000 KIA, many convoy transports and escorts spared. Planners will fudge the numbers to justify it. Since life is priceless this is a butcher's business, not a moral calculus. The decisions makers giving these orders should take this as a very heavy burden. And the men that volunteer to execute these orders are truly remarkable.

ย @johnnyz2378ย I understand. It is the "lured" part that baffles me. The decision making is what interests me. Regards

Regarding operation Husky How did the germans manage to do better at Messina than the british did at Dunkirk? The british had to leave behind all their heavy vehicles, but the germans pulled lots of equipment to Italy proper. Why didn't the Royal Navy strike Messina hard? (Mers-al-kebir or Taranto hard) Why no battleships raking the channel from the south? Weren't the ferries fish in a barrel? Was this another oppotunity lost? Like the channel dash? Thanks!!!

If we could make roads like they made plank caulking 200 years ago, that would be nice.

There must be a special ring of hell for millitary procurement. Build three ships to sell for scrap and spares.

Yeah. I refuse to monday quarterback VonSpee. He already proved his competence at Coronel. He had a weak hand after that: no coal, no re-supply, poor intelligence. He played and lost. Respect ๐ฉ

Totally agree.๐ And you would not believe the size of the internet hordes that shout "mission kill" when you point this to them. Regards
4
ย @DraftySatyrย Totally agree. I would hope that ALL command staff are "half way" decent or better. And most soldiers go into battle with the belief that it is so.

46:45 Time travelling Drachinifel arrives al 1950. Orders full stop, drops anchor, raises Mike flag, and orders rum drinks with little colored umbrellas for all the crew.

Aren't the breech screw caps heavier than the shells? How many people are needed to unscrew the caps? How do you put them back on?

progress and change can be blinding fast... but the QWERTY keyboard, 12V DC electrical systems, the M2 machine gun, and the spring mousetrap remain as living fossils. ๐ The rapid pace of advance suddenly yields to "good enough", and sometimes it makes me laugh myself silly. Cheers!!

Drach already gave us "floaty log". Now we are blessed with "angry raft"๐

Goering became yellow of envy when he saw the RAF Mosquitos, made of wood. Imagine the body blow to morale: finding fresh chocolate cake in a foxhole!

11:05 I find it funny when people say that recycling is "modern" People with limited resources wasted nothing, even ashes were gathered to make soap A whole wooden ship being dismantled would be a boon for an entire year.

ย @goodshipkaraboudjanย the oilfield is the same, we just add "the effing dumbest way" as default. ๐๐๐ The "wrong way" usually works if you get a bigger hammer. ๐คฃ๐๐คฃ

52:00 The Phillipines were always meant to be lost as per war plan orange Pearl Harbor? Was meant to be untouched That is what the " optics" demanded. The alternative was admiting war plan was wrong, and this cannot be done.

Imagine the Jackie-coin: "WoW broadside...long range...big gun...much dakka...fast ship...more dakka... no dread...armor something"

Relating to shell/armor penetration video. Why is there no high speed footage of these tests? All I have seen are after the fact stills. HIgh speed cameras were developed well before the 30s, and there is high speed footage of the Manhattan project explosive lens developmet. Thank you.

Min 15:30 "forgotten the cruiser".... Would it be fair to say that the USN lacked cruisers up to 1930 because the US did not have an empire to trot around showing the flag? The navy was shaped by foreign policy, and the US had no (peacetime, empire, show the flag) requirements. After Korea, the USN went into overkill and "show the flag" became "here is a carrier battle group for your consideration"
