Steampunk appreciation video. Brass fittings, ornate gauges, wrought iron decorations, manufacturer plates, rotary electrical contacts, engine telegraphs and voice tubes.

HMS Captain... free surface effect and low freeboard will get you.

@phil20_20 for the weight and target that would be engaged with 8inches shells, a surface to surface missile has longer range and accuracy. If it needs an 8inch shell, it deserves a missile strike. Also. Anything that needs an 8inch shell is eveb better served by a air to surface missile. Even Longer range! and

@jp-um2fr yes. The auto fretaging is used in high pressure pump equipment for oilfied and mining. I had the luck to see a fatigue failure on a pump, it had 12 years pumping seawater. It was a clean cut across four and a half inches of steel. Amazing to see, unique set of pressure/cycles that was way outside the design life case.

USNavy: there are cruisers and cruiser killers, so we need cruiser-killer killers. ALSO USNavy: by 1944 there are no IJN cruiser left.🤷♂️

There must be an inside joke related to the name "Cerberus". The mythical dog reportedly had three heads, but it was depicted mostly with only two showing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerberus#/media/File:Herakles_Kerberos_Louvre_F204.jpg). In an era where most monitors had a single turret (even Huascar), did the name reflect the double turret design?

Have you heard of the Luftwaffe rescue buoys? The RAF also had rescue floaty thingies. These are also pretty interesting. Respectfully

1:31 regarding labeling "left-right" , it was inadequate to use "port-starboard". And most people at the time would not be familiar with "clockwise-counterclockwise" And extending this to today, in the near future "clockwise" will be lost as most timepieces are now digital and no longer have rotating hands. Future generations may never see a clock face to understand the reference.

Today I learned about "trans-sonic match-sticks". Going to file that in my brain right next to "explosive coal dust".

The fact that even the low level cheap Flower class had radars, and that these radars were upgraded during the war, was key for their success.

Min 5:41 What is that hideous blocky thing moored on the right hand side of the image? A caisson with tumblehome sides?

The middle name "kingdom" was a tell. 😁

@kemarisite Thanks. Guess that big naval guns are one way streets 😁

How did they rise and lower the screw in these mixed propulsion vessels?🤔 ❓

@Cld_Brn the ramp itself was made of steel, and could stop "small arms" fire... so maybe good enough to stop a 0.50 round fired from afar? -ish..? The sides of the boat were plywood. Armour was bolted on the sides later. Some people say 1/4 in plate. Again, small arms only.

@chrissouthgate4554 thanks 👍 🎩

@ArcticTemper loosing Suez would have complicated the supply to/from India. That was why it was so important. It was difficult getting to Malta from the West ( Gibraltar). From the east (Alexandria) it was "easier".

Another solid video. Great.👍

Still a better design than HMS Captain.

1-The myth of IJN carrier >flight decks< full of airplanes is no more. 2-UNarmored IJN carriers with ->hangars<-, packed of fueled, armed airplanes, in close proximity, waiting to be brought up, fuel hoses still full, the removed bombs awaiting to be stowed away is a very vulnerable disposition to play host to an angry 500lbs bomb falling from the sky.

@mpetersen6 Min 45:30 "new ships, new construction" to create jobs during the depression. The will to spend was there, spend in flashy big gun boats. But battleships cannot bring troops to an island, so the planning is mismatched with the spending.

HMS Eskimo: "Wow, if I had a nickel for every time my bow was blown off, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?"

Did the skipper and crew of the Santa Fe get any recognition? Crashing your ship into another is usually frowned upon, but in this case it saved many sailors.

28:00 I wonder if and how these ships influenced the later art deco and aerodynamic arquitechture designs

@blabbitch did I say Olympia was part of the Great white fleet? What is the "joke" you are talking about? Go strawman somewhere else. Please DO note my comment is about the paint scheme: stately and magnificent.

5:00 note the wave breaker. Were they expecting typhoons? Or were there overly optimistic about the speed they could achieve?

Tip of the hat

same here, did a serious double take

If there ever was a Klingon-Beatty...would you imagine Drach making remarks on his lineage? In the original Klingon with PG13 rated subtittles.

@Ushio01 Fair point. Agreed: missiles cannot substitute shell weight and kinetics. 👍
1
@overtoast1105 yes. That is where "distributed lethality" comes in. The boat just moves the missile. Somewhere, a sophisticated drone is doing the targeting and guidance. Cheers 👍

Video suggestion: ships captured as prizes and displayed for bragging rights, or kept in services for straight up trolling.

They show the ad, the video hangs up.
