  8. If Italy wanted Suez to cut the route to India, why didn't Germany and Italy attack Gibraltar first and together? If Singapore can and did fall, Gibraltar surely was vulnerable. A concentrated Uboat blockade and amphibious invasion from north Africa, instead of wasting over long distances across Libia.

  9. IMHO (and it may be a faulty opinion) the IJN failed to recognize that the "decisive battle" were the landings in Guadalcanal. They had to send everything they had, at that very moment. Now, I am not saying it was enough to win the war. What I am saying is THAT was the battle, and the moment, where they contradicted their own strategy. Respectfully.

  19.  @rohanthandi4903  because ships were no longer armoured against large gun shells. Weaker (modern) ships are now more vulnerable to pityful missiles. If the torpedo was obsolete, attack submarines would not have torpedoes. And yet they do. The Belgrano effed around and found out that torpedoes are FAR from obsolete. The fact that you are now attempting to qualify from torpedoes to "air launched" torpedoes means you are trying to generalize a particular case.

  21. I walk away with this idea: Torpedo bombers are torpedo boats taken to the limit. Fragile, one shot, no reload, everything sacrificed for speed. Battleships had to give up even the secondary guns for more AA dakka.

  32.  @Pusserdoc  I celebrate that we agree that there is a similarity between the Uboat/Qship and the Sidney/Kormoran The difference, and to ME what was the "reckless" .. was that the Qships happened 25 years before the Kormoran fought the Sidney . The Uboats that got sunk in WW1 by Qships are the only ones that can claim to be "surprised", naive or careless. After that, nobody can. If Burnett knew about the Qships and the abandonment of the "cruiser rules"... since 1920s, he was reckless. Are you going to argue that Burnett did not study naval warfare for over 25 years?

  39.  @wildkarrde3370  after a "few days" you don't want to put bloated corpses on deck. You would have hundred of sailors commenting on the stench, corroding morale. The sense of smell connects directly to the most primitive reptilian brain, where reason is dead on arrival. If you read or talk to the veterans, mention of the smells pull a dark cloud over their faces. Burial at sea is only done when you are not already in port. By burying these men in Tonga, only a handful of the crew were exposed to (additional) trauma. Easier to manage. Cheers 👍
