  4. 1:00:20 We build a lot of complex structures full of structural supports wrapped in weather tight covering and find them quite useful. Granted people rarely want to use a skyscraper as a warehouse but a tank full of structural supports fills and empties just the same. You might call the supports baffles.

  6. The weight savings I find the best is while the P-40 fuselage and main wings were separate complete structures which were then bolted together. The Honorable Zero's fuselage was not structurally complete until riveted onto the wing. This makes the plane take up more space when being shipped and made it more difficult to cannibalize two chopped up planes into a single flyable plane.

  19. The USS Iowa has the Captain's port cabin and the Captain's sea cabin or ready room. The relatively luxurious Captain's port cabin would be high on the list of space available for VIP accommodations.

  23. Just a SWAG but 83.5mm could be 4-pdr particularly if their iron was unusually low in graphite. During the USofA Civil war German guns were a little large because German cast iron was unusually high in graphite.

In WWII the Swiss cut off from the source of most of their coal and needing coal for domestic heating to keep the people from freezing to death in winter the Swiss rail service was forbidden from using coal. While the Swiss mainlines were electrified the still used steam powered switch engines. And for the same reasons that Switzerland couldn't by coal they could not buy new engines. Fortunately while talking around the problem without finding a workable answer they decided to make tea. When the electric kettle whistled giving somebody clue and Switzerland having plentiful hydroelectricity generation converted their switch engines to use electrical heating. It worked well enough that after WWII ended they did not convert them back to coal and replaced them with conventional electric locomotives more on a as soon as convenient rather than as soon as possible basis. Some of the switch engines were sold and reconverted to coal. You can heat a boiler with electricity but the second law of thermodynamics is, You cannot win. You cannot break even. And you cannot get out of the game. You won't be able to generate enough steam to make the electric to heat the boiler.

  31.  @benholroyd5221  Japan was not at war with with anyone else when they invaded Russia. Afghanistan and Finland were invaded by Russia so they didn't start the war. Nor were they fighting other wars at the time.

  48. The mark 14 had multiple small problems that were aside from the magnetic detonator were easy to fix. Unfortunately BuOrd refuse to admit that there were any problems with their beautiful new torpedoes.
