@ulrichkalber9039 He was in the German Army.

A fast fleet oiler that is also capable of delivering new planes to the carrier sounds useful.

And down in Cuba Spain just seized an American ship because they don't see use being able to do anything about it. Congress: We can cut our party fund to give the Navy a bit of cash for new ships.

If a patriotic young German draftsman had hidden a good set of drawings for the L20e alpha under his bed at the end of WWI and brought them out for modernizing in time for the Bismarck class, would Bismarck been a better battleship?
8
The Bob Semple tank did exactly what it was designed to do, it got Bob Semple into the newsreels and papers. That said they probably would have performed fairly well against the Japanese in defensive actions.
8
It should be remembered that all the physical attributes that make for a great dancer also make for a great fighter, plus you can get along with people.
8
"Designed by committee" words to scare with second only to "I'm from the government and am here to help."

@bkjeong4302 You are looking at it from the wrong prospective. What would have happened to a navy that spent the 30s building all carriers and the aircraft that were required to sink battleships had never materialized? The most expensive thing you can do is put all your money on the wrong option. Thus in the long run it is more cost effective to cover several options by say building carriers and battleships until you have proof of what the future holds. 0nly a fools bets everything on one roll of dice; even if the fools wins.

Using two spotlights for night range finding makes a twisted kind of sense.
8
@planegaper The kamikaze attacks while horrifying were less effective than conventional attacks and removed effective planes from the Japanese inventory so they could not make another attack. This led to fewer allied losses. Removing the enemies best commanders is a good thing.
8
Incidentally the fix for the Liberty ships was a long steel "Band-Aid" riveted along both sides of the ship to reduce the stresses where the ships were breaking.
8
The battle of Guadalcanal contained a serious amount of Naval and land combat at the same time.
8
Some ice breakers have the propeller in front when breaking ice. But when moving through open water the propeller is pushing primarily because ice breaking bows ride real bad when moving through open water.
8
They did that, it's called a boarding action.
8
Gatling guns are still used on Modern US Navy ships in the form of the close-in weapon system.
8
It all makes more sense when you find out that the "Pound £" started out being worth a pound of pennies, and that 240 is equally dividable into 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12.
8
I have often said that the Japanese would have been better off bombing the machine shops, cranes, and supply depots rather than the ships themselves.
7
It is nice that she was restored to the configuration of when she was a state of the art warship.
7
Mostly it was a case of not wanting to put an elderly Doberman in a pit with battling Pitbulls.
7
Speaking of battleships that dealt poorly with rough seas could you use something like submarine dive planes to stabilize the Iowa-class battleships well enough to match the King George V class in rough seas?
7
Just what the Royal Navy needed in 39.
7
@SonsOfLorgar No it is not. Neither of those serve the hard working productive workers.
7
@Slarti Having a boss that expects you to do the job right instead of how you have always done it is really annoying to low performance people.
7
@Junyo Clearly you are new here. Watch his video "The Second Pacific Squadron, the Voyage of the Damned." It is a dark comedy of madness and torpedo boats.
7
Is it a cruiser that identifies as a destroyer or Destroyer that identifies as a cruiser?
7
Turning armed civilians into an army is very quick compared to building a navy.
7
The only difference between fascist and socialist/communist governments is the lies told to justify the rulers power and wealth.
7
@Dave_Sisson Just as the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was an attack on the entirety of the USofA the invasion of the Falklands islands was an attack on the entirety of the UK and the vestige remains of the British Empire. So it was an attack of an independent country.
7
Modifications to allow at sea refueling would not be difficult and you can always tow the d_mn_d thing. Not being able to reliably hit small cities probably had something to do with the idea being discarded.
7
American were looking for stability augmentation.
7
@frankmiller95 Dead is an awfully odd word to come up with when shortening deduced.
7
So in Wartime the Royal Navy is very much he's a freak but he's our freak.
7
Fortunately Germans tend to be poor at spy craft. If they would have stockpiled supplies for submarine operations on the French islands thing would have been significantly worse for the Allies.
7
Dragging her anchor and being smashed on the rocks and being smash on the rocks by a tsunami are not an entirely incompatible set of stories.
6
@AdmRose Not even close.
6
The navigation buoys on steroids has a certain simple elegance to it. Although deploying lighthouses and lightships on notorious rocks would be more practical.
6
What would have happened if the USofA Army Air Forces figured out what an effective antiship weapon air dropped torpedoes could be and develop their own torpedo that worked and configured the B-17 to drop them?
6
Last time I was this early the 5 inch 38 was state of the art.
6
A little late or much too early. But still a brilliant design.
6
@stephenconnolly3018 Just because you never achieved anything on merit does not mean that others don't.
6
Not only the middle child one born to daddy's mistress.
6
It sounds like the HMS Africa is the ship that the American Super Frigates wanted to be.
6
Torpedoes have a rather distinctive sound so probably some of the evasive maneuvers resulted from reports from sonar Torpedoes in the water. Again the assumption is the person who launched them is competent.
6
One of the advantages in the turbo Electric Drive is in disaster relief the ship can provide huge amount of electricity to get the lights back on.
6
The Ju 87 needed a fighter escort. The extended wing Me 109 had strengthened landing gear and ground looping is much less a concern in carrier operations with always taking off & landing into the wind and the arrested landings.
6
@VersusARCH Stalin didn't need to see that enough food was produced to feed the entire population. Just let people starve and confiscate the food they have to feed the engineers and bully boys keeping the starving in line.
6
@mpetersen6 The chamber of the AR-15 was not chromed to start with. Half a ranger battalion in Vietnam with self-purchased AR-15s who were not cleaning their rifles but using the proper powder and didn't have a jamming problem. The cheep powder caused caused other problems that greatly reduced the rifled life as well but the cause of jamming was from the new powder residue.
6
@fearthehoneybadger The Nazis had a habit of when they said if things aren't fixed heads will roll that heads would roll if things weren't fixed promptly.
6
Sometimes being OCD and making sure everything was done right makes you a hero.
6
Just a demonstration that German fighting sailors are not to be disrespected.
