I thought Roots was really pretty hokey, but also was raised and educated to know that SLAVERY WAS WRONG. I never doubted the EVIL that was American Slavery. In anecdotal form, I was in the part of our high school marching band who objected to having the Confederate Battle Flag put in the colour guard ..., especially when it was done just to win trophies in parades in the Lil Ole South. The high school was actually FIRMLY in the Union North, and people like myself had all sorts of Civil War artifacts in the family, like the tintype I still have of an ancestor who allegedly died in Andersonville prison camp. I secretly cheered when the Daughters of the Grand Army of the Republic got the school board to ban the flag, but a lot of people, including band members and their loud-mouthed 'Band-Aid' parents, were sore that they couldn't fly it. I also saw my first Klan Parade in that same city, as a child.
That being said, I ALSO was in a blue-collar family and blue-collar bosses of part-time jobs. THEY DESPISED ROOTS, mostly, from what I could sense, because it wasn't about White Men fighting the war, but was on commercial TV as a unavoidable reminder of why the war was legitimate and justified.
