Car talk was great because they did the old screening schtick, as in some one picks up your phone-in and asks, "What's your problem?", they hang up, someone else calls you back later to say "You're up next and we've researched the answer!", sometimes not even that-show 'later', then you get put on with Tom and Ray. Didn't really matter to me after I found out, either, because it was the only PBS show that was absolutely excellent (well, except for Prairie Home Companion, until the nasty stuff came out)! Myth Buster?! Like the old Bert and I skit about sausages, "But, once you clean it (i.e., cut the adverts and ENDLESS recapitulation!!!!), Martha, there's not much left!"

Well, sounds like somebody should post the web sites that have those tools already there, because that sounds like a grad student subject matter expert opportunity that's already been mined out of "New, Exciting, Goes-Faster" ideas for a good/acceptable thesis.

  10. If they can't do the math, they DON'T UNDERSTAND THE SCIENCE! The fact they succeeded is more due to ruthlessness and bullying people smarter than they are than their scientific ability. They're just word salad dealers, who lie and misrepresent as is required by 'Murican Bidnessman 101. I'd also like to point out that those people for whom science seemed to come easy probably worked a LOT harder through to that point than the people in these examples who grew up in 'comfortable, some-sort-of-success-guaranteed' situations. BTW, my one summer on Govt work, I read Anna Karenina, War and Peace, Gone with the Wind, Portrait of a Lady, Foundation Trilogy (until it got ridiculous in determinism), cuz too many friends who were in the Arts & Science vs. Engineering & Architecture school. Didn't want to seem illiterate. I had already started Atlas Shrugged during the school year, but dropped it as being completely out of touch with the way the world ACTUALLY WORKED, cuz capitalism has an unending stream of ambitious, smart people who would NEVER let the government take over like Rand pretended ..., the first of those robber barons were called The Founding Fathers and proved Rand didn't know what she was talking about in because of the ACTUAL march of history ..., you're totally correct that the oligarchs would STARVE and we would tell them not to let the screen door hit them in the butt as they flee to Mars ..., like the bold holes of crooks in New Zealand, where the first thing to happen to them would be their security force would KILL THEM ALL and then live off the plunder of those crooks ...

The mindless drek we got shilled, which was only Cowboys and Indians in Middle Earth, means I will NEVER SEE A GOOD PRODUCTION because of the "It's Already Been Done" Syndrome, and now Prime has done the same to The Silmarillion and the first ages. Amazing how Dr Who seems to get it mostly right ..., except for the horrible, Let's Do "Scooby Do Dalek Busting Team" scriptwriter that Jodie got blindsided by.

  18. We're all going to end up in the world of Terry Gilliam's "Brazil"; drowning in utter mediocrity AND Vulture Capitalism allied with Fascism. Watched some really interesting AI music videos, BUT the scenes eventually became utterly repetitive and disjointedly sequenced, not to mention they were really just pretty pictures with little relevance in the greater part to the music. That Fake Intelligence 'technical illustration' was generally interesting, but utterly banal because of the lack of ANY context. Oh, and it looks so trite like stealing/using Geiger or other such real art as a barely changed baseline.

Free Will became a big Atheist/Fundagelical Argument Point a little while ago, as part of the Biochemistry vs. Christian Soul argument, especially as a show of how far the biochemistry had come since the 1950s Fundagelical TheoLOLogy being preached by the Fundies. The current argument is just a statistical 'long tail' of the one-sided continuation of that argument after the main Atheist side has pretty much left it for even greener pastures ..., but publication-starved philosophers think they've found a good place to publish with very little rebuttal, cuz nobody of any repute is interested in arguing the point, anymore, when the biochemistry research is so advanced (see recent "discovery of Qualia as a physical phenomena" reports: see Sabine for that one). BTW, actually READ some Dennett and you may get hooked. There is a LOT of things philosophy has identified that the physical science approach does not identify because it exists outside a Research Proposal or Grant Application. Especially Dennett's "Consciousness Explained" for ideas that are STILL relevant.

  21. College students of an emotionally balanced kind have always been interested in learning about Life on their own, not just being trained to jump through hoops somebody else profits from. Maybe you have forgotten it, but college is the first time a lot of people have been on their own doing things OTHER THAN obsessing over 'just the fact, Ma'am ..." If you are in 'management' now, you will always be a failure because you can't lead and motivate peole, and if you are not, you are not someone I'd employ because you obviously CAN'T lead and motivate a cannonball to fall from the top of the tower, and you refuse to LEARN how and why.

  23. I'd bet the people who say these things are not people who sit down and read just the abstracts in Science magazine every week. I'm talking about NON-Professionals, too! Of course, controlled nuclear fusion will continue being "One Grad School Career" away for the next 50 years ... And, as to lasers, it's also the emergence of solid state lasers which are a melding of so much science that drives the fiber optic industry, too! My sister got a souvenir blue LED flashlight for her support of that competitive program that went around the World. For me, I'd just be satisfied with THE explanation WHY Inflation happened instead of being told it DID, now I'll be quiet.

Talk Tubes: See movie "The Great Race" with Jack Lemon (Professor Fate) and Peter Falk (Max, "Push the Button!" Max) in the Professor's death-submarine, communicating between each other over talk tubes ..., while standing back-to-back to each other!! And, that boy with the answer "Heat!"? He's a civil engineer now so he doesn't have to deal with anything but Mud 101 and Concrete Senior Seminar. And, what Petroski doesn't cover as well are the qualitative issues involved with defining Failure. Means different things to different people and uses.

I REALLY despise people who over-promise and under-deliver because I've seen the practical destructiveness in the project management space. I expect better from scientists, too, but when the explanations start disappearing down 'renormalization' ratholes it really makes me understand the damage scientists, as mortgage and car loan holders, do to the institution of Science.
