  16. All rather immature. The UK has subsumed EU standards (or International standards as applicable) into law and both parties recognise those standards. As long as goods are manufactured according to ISO 9000 audit, there should be no restrictions necessary. When the UK reverts to British Standards then transportation may be looked at on an individual basis. Likewise, if manufacturers are trusted on standards, then it is a short step to devise a similar auditing procedure for exports that can negate most customs inspections.

If BMW supplies parts for manufacturing BMW vehicles they are hardly likely to want to stop supplying them. As for parts for Japanese cars we can always switch to imported parts directly from Japan in the short term. Then establish local manufacture here in the UK.

We have to stop them at source by making it crystal clear that they will not be allowed to remain in the UK unless they can produce evidence of genuine, targeted persecution. If people wish to apply for entry on economic grounds there are legal channels available for them to do so.

However, I would like to see an independent survey of UK foreign aid and a commitment to target those most in need. Ideally to projects that build sustainable economic development to the world's poorest nations.
