Southerners and conservatives in general have a hard time owning up to their own faults preferring to project them onto their opponents while they paint a rosy picture of the past draped in nostalgia. The Civil Rights Act was needed because southern states were trampling on the constitutional rights of black citizens. That flag was raised in support of segregation and Jim Crow laws so fuck it and anyone who supports that particular flag. As for Northern racists, they existed and do exist now but you don't have people in general trying to defend them or make excuses for them.

As a southerner I get some of the resentment stored up from the defeat of the Civil War but we have to realize our own part in it. Lincoln didn't start the war. The South did by first seceding specifically over fears of Lincoln's perceived anti-slavery stance then by firing on Ft Sumter. Then in the aftermath Jim Crow laws were inflicted on blacks to impede their progress and their rights while 4000 were lynched over the decades. Yet they want to brush all of that aside with a scarce acknowledgement and act like they are misrepresented

I thought Ana's video was nuanced and the kind of thing I expect from progressives - to be hard on progressive candidates as opposed to being soft like the corporate media is with rightwing and corporate democrat politicians. The reaction she got surprised me and Gabbard or her team insisting she not be present in the interview is troubling to say the least. It was not a good move on their part IMHO. The ugliness of the 2016 primaries is threatening to raise its head again. If Gabbard gets close to the nomination will other candidate supporters (ie mainly Bernie) be commanded to support Gabbard or else?

This is why the corporate Democrat approach of trying to woe some of the moderate right over to them is doomed to failure. They need to be marginalized as the extremists they are and not treated as normal.
