  3.  @gr8ketch  Trump is more a product of the insanity that has been brewing in the rank and file of the rightwing. They are so desperate for a strong leader who "tells it like it is" after the disaster that was the Bush Presidency and having to endure the international popularity of a black democrat president who was competent at his job that they latched on to this huckster. And that really is what Trump is at his core - he's a con man and what con men do best is get people to willingly do what he wants. Trump never could have done this in 2000 or 2008 because conditions were not ripe enough (and perhaps he didn't have dementia then either). By 2015 he likely saw how impervious to facts much of the rightwing base was (the whole Birther thing was a testing of the waters no doubt) and decided to speak their language while holding no punches which got him nominated out of 15 other candidates. He essentially highjacked the rightwing base right from under the GOP with his Pied Piper tactics, a base they had been conditioning through Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, rightwing radio, etc...for the last two decades. But again, he could not have done so if those people weren't already in that state of mind to begin with.

They have been brainwashed into thinking Democrats are liberals and that liberals are commie nazi baby killers who want to destroy America. Progressives need to wake up and realize what has been going on for the last few decades. It's gone beyond simply a difference of opinions - it's war and has been for years. The Republicans have created this warlike mentality amongst their constituents that they are at war with people who want to destroy America. This is why conservative voters will vote against their best interests and against their own principles because they feel they have to defeat this dreaded liberal enemy. Anyone growing up blue in a red state should be well aware of this. This is why conservative voters will vote for someone like DesJarlais despite his affairs and abortions. All's fair in love and war and war calls for desperate measures so principles be damned.
