If you look at countries and empires that were once great you'll often find that what brought them down or made them fall behind the rest of the world was a conservative mentality that wanted to cling to the past and not move forward. Ironically the past they wanted to cling to was often forward-thinking and innovative. US conservatives fail to understand this in their rosy-tinted nostalgia of the past which is why they are such a danger to the country they profess to love and the progressive spirit which it was founded on.

  21. The argument that most mass shooters are Democrats is in the same category as Hitler was a liberal/leftist myth. The Right has given up on real arguments and have instead gone for desperate distraction tactics while many of their followers actually believe these myths having repeated them so many times. It has an uncomfortable connection with holocaust deniers by using a similar tactic which is to get people to argue and discuss these issues thus giving some sense of validity to their outlandish arguments. Carl Rove is currently doing the same by talking about Hillary Clinton and brain damage and getting the mass media to seriously discuss something no one thought about 2 years ago.  However it's a Catch22, if we argue, we give validity but if we ignore it, the myths fester and grow. Ultimately though it shows the big divide in this country. You have one segment of the population so caught up in these myths who hate anything they perceive as liberal that they will believe anything negative about them regardless if there is any logic or rationality behind it.

The fact is the Rust Belt did not abandoned Hillary because some whiny college students demanded safe spaces. They abandoned her because she and the DNC abandoned them.

  30. Everyone gets pissed if people outside their group throw a derogatory slur at them but generally have no problem using it against themselves in jest. It takes the sting out of the slur until it's used by people outside of the group especially an empowered group.

It won't make a difference - all the facts and common sense will fall on deaf ears because 2nd Amendment and paranoia of hordes of home invaders (a relatively recently coined term to amp up the fear and need for guns) and evil government storm troopers bent on throwing everyone into Hobbit homes and FEMA Death Camps. The rest of the world with possibly the exception of Somalia looks at the US as a madhouse.

Sandy A I think it has more to do with the history of the situation when the parents, grandparents, and/or great-grandparents were pushed off their land living in occupied territory that is constantly encroached upon by settlers and when Israel retaliates to some ineffectual rockets they end up killing thousands. But no they'd all be happy as larks if it weren't for the brainwashing.

  36. Sandy A it is not an age-old conflict. It only goes back a hundred years or less as the conflicts really started after WWI. And it doesn't matter that it wasn't as many Arabs pushed off their land as being claimed now (your argument sounds suspiciously similar to a rather odious denial type). It still happened and that memory is fresh and bitter. Trying to claim it's just brainwashing is to discredit their grievances as is calling them simply "Arabs" in an effort to deprive them of an identity.

  37. rondragon The disingenuousness of rightwing Israelis and their supporters is flabbergasting. They'll say "well, the hamas shot rockets from a school so it's their fault that we had no choice but to completely obliterate those largely ineffectual rockets with our missiles!" Here's an idea - don't blow up the school. The chances of the hamas having much of an armed presence around those rockets is rather small. A well trained strike force could take them out with snipers and assault tactics but they don't want to do that preferring to just blow the rockets up along with anyone else in the area.
