This one looks to be a not so good example. Every bodypanel is another color from the one next to it.

"13 what?" 1000 rpm Doug, as it clearly states.... Is he trolling us?
80
Its subtle to non car people.
46
Its on par with the best 4 cylinders of the time, if we exclude high end sportscars or rally specials. So pretty good, yeah.

This car was famously one of the fastest cars in the world in a low speed-slalom type course/test back in its day. This includes the most extreme sportscars/supercars you can think of. For example it had the best time of any car in the old version of the "Moose test" that the Mercedes A class you previously reviewed/bought flipped over in. Nothing sporty at the time had the active anti roll bars this has and it did wonders for body control and fully utilizing the grip of the tires. Other than that its a pretty great car all around. I guess you can call it the "Anti tesla" in the way that where they do away with all the buttons and stalks for a touch screen, this sometimes got two buttons for the same thing, like for example the rear power windows. I like it. I had the newer C5 myself.
31
@squeakycleannnn Seems like it did, though?
22
@mortensenvick5711 You dont need carbon ceramics on a street car. You dont need larger brakes than can fit under an 18" wheel either. Heck, even 17" is enough for way above any legal speed outside Germany, and really even inside Germany as well.
18
@Arun999 Since it became the average price of a new car sold in the US, possibly?
17
@Gnomosfortheoffice He didnt know, most likely
15
Yep, like several Citroen models.
15
@alekvassinskiy1286 Hate to say it but he usually doesnt. I like him, but he doesnt do all that much research into the cars he reviews. There are tons of similar quirks he has missed over the years. Still one of the best for showing unusual stuff though.
15
I seriously doubt it makes a difference, or they would offer it for the normal cars they sell many times more of. Wouldnt make sense to keep a non performance sales argument from the other models. Maybe on the e36 which was the first car to have it, it had some effect. No, I am pretty sure its just another styling choice to differentiate it from lower models, they have put tons of those on the M cars over the years.
13
Especially since this generation cayenne is very heavy because of the terrain stuff they later deleted.
12
@afcgeo882 No matter the worth of the car in other areas, there is not a single Ford derived part in this car. So, calling it a Ford seems like being a bit misleading. Now, the generations that followed a few years later, is another matter. But this one? no, not really.
11
@carrotplox Depends heavily on which model. Some french cars are among the most reliable ever built, bar none. In "modern" days, some french cars often have very good rust protection compared to others, which can be a great advantage for longevity in markets with very salty roads.
11
As far as I can recall, you are exactly right, that is what it was intended to be. A limited production halo car. A styling focused concept car for the road. In my eyes, it takes the blocky, brutal-ish styling of the early 1980s cars such as the Audi coupe quattro and turns it up to 11. You like square fender flares?, Well here is an entire car as a square fender flare! You like 2 smallish-rectangular headlights? Here is 3 of them!
10
I get the analogy but its almost 100% exclusively marketing and brand name making those clocks sought after. There are also lots of practical differences in that a mechanical watch cost literally zero to run, can easily be stored by the dozens in a normal desk drawer and have very low maintenance costs... all of which are many many many magnitudes more expensive and cumbersome with a car. There will be car enthusiasts for vintage ICE cars, but it will be many thousand of times less than currently.

@zrally2107 Rear seat climate remote control and parking heater. Maybe something else I forgot but I dont think so. Source: I got one myself, but am too lazy to go outside and check.
9
Yep, Its the most pathetic EV in the same way as the Ford Model T is a pathetic car compared to those introduced much later.
9
@real151kmh It is a low number these days, but not so much back then. Certainly not in europe. People in europe have very little fascination with stoplight racing as far as I can tell, its mostly an American thing. To be honest, I dont think Americans are all that fascinated with it really either, I think its mostly the number on the paper they want a lot of the time.
9
There is. My BMW didnt have them and it also had a defrostable, openable rear window. Seems like it was an afterthought on this car.
8
To be fair even back then there were a lot of models that didnt have it (according to what you likely mean by logical, at least).
8
@FuckTrumpFuckYouIfYouVoted4Him Yes, I "got it", since thats exactly what I assumed he meant. And my comment still stand, since even since the 1980s and onwards, BMW didnt follow that "logic" anymore. Perhaps you didnt know this when you made your comment, because otherwise it makes even less sense as a reply...
8
@Ennui. Lots of cars have partially or fully zinc treated bodies, and have had so since many decades ago. It is not literally rust proof when used in real word conditions, the zinc treatment is a just a small part of it and differs a lot between cars, even of the same brand. French cars in general have from my observation had some of the best body rust proofing since year 2000 or so, but even they are far from perfect in, as I said, real world conditions. Dont get me started on the atrocious rust proofing on older Mercedes cars or the flaking-down-to-the-metal of VWs.
8
It is a niche, but one has to look at it as an SUV first. If you NEED an SUV, it somewhat makes sense. You are right about the housewife bit, but this generation Cayenne is perhaps the most allround car ever built in terms of capabilities. It seats 5, was not much slower than an M5 of the era, can tow 7500lbs, is quite comfortable, and with normal wheels is quite good in terrain as well, rivalling jeeps.
8
I am glad you like it, but I think you are missing a few "American" in your post.. i.e. "It changed American car design forever", etc. Many euro cars had similar designs way earlier, of which many were sold in the US... if you are talking about a true ground breaking production design for cars, the Audi 100 C3 would be it, and to a lesser extent the Ford sierra of a few years later.
7
Tesla model x has something similar, havent heard too many complaints.
7
Yeah but not compared to many other 4 bangers these days or overall compared to other cars in general.
6
@umakegoodcookies And he never will.
6
@ To be super specific: Front passenger seat, yes. The inflation tool with the hose is, from factory, stored in a bag under the rear seat.
6
@fakevirus8828 These old ones were pretty good, as was every VAG car of the time.
6
Rejoice if you like Porsche though, because it gives them money to keep building other things. Myself, I got a very old "performance luxury suv" which was quite cheap, relatively speaking, and its great to tow with. No complaints from me.
5
i3 wasnt as controversial as this though.
5
Electric has huge potential and always has. It has more or less been about how much they can squeeze from the batterys since day one; 120+ years ago or so. Now the batteries are finally at the level where things like this are feasible.
5
Maybe you will look like a waffle after sitting in them?
5
Well out of production by then, but yes, more or less.
5
@saraleon97 He means the word "random" is a bit misplaced if taken seriously.
5
Because most people watching this wont know what an Elise or Evora is, probably. Yes, really.
4
@drippgxd Its not star wars seats, its "Vader" seats, and its an inofficial nickname, presumably because of how they look with the headrest sides extending down and becoming the shoulder bolsters of the seat.
4
@Teddingtin Probably couldnt find one easily in the near vicinity, as others have said.
4
Secretly? He more or less called them chumps!
4
Probably, it certainly is in the running.
4
@wowdogeful If by "all" you mean quite a lot, I might agree. Far from literally "all" though.
4
@N1ckZ Well niche among what is genuinly useful to some I mean. Most people who buy them just got the money to spend and want "the best".
4
@markallen2984 They are not that good, wouldnt say garbage though. These old ones were a lot better though.
4
@VNCTHE1 Not much to say other than that you are wrong, very wrong. All statistics and data backs this up. I can only assume you are misinformed for some reason, likely because of your inexperience and lack of historical knowledge. On top of that, I suspect you add a bit of hyperbole you know yourself to be untrue. Get some data from 1950s to 1980s and compare it to their competitors, and it should be clear that you should sing a different tune, if you care about accuracy. Cheers.
4
@227conejo Many modern SUV has 4wd systems that arent any better for grip than this, regardless of tires. It is open diffs galore. The only thing saving them a bit is their traction control system, but it is often not calibrated very well for terrain driving, depending on model of SUV. Secondly, look at the ground clearance for many of them, this little car has oodles more than most of them.
4
You are correct, but he is as well. Its both a crash and theft thing.
3
@FuckTrumpFuckYouIfYouVoted4Him You really posted this kind of stuff as replies? Even as ironic trolling, its not good enough. At least not for me.
3
I seriously doubt there is as much as a single car sold less in total because of what you may think is unappealing design. On the contrary, many people prefer the newer desing, and all statistics point to them outnumbering the ones who dont like it, by a considerable margin.
