  5. Not quite. Thatcher was a trained scientist/Chemist. It was all about limiting the compensation paid to farmers. There has been a similar situation with dealing with Bovine TB and the failure to control it by just concentrating on culling badgers because too many farmers will not accept that they are a large part of the problem (Again the compensation payment to farmers for having an infected cow slaughtered has been an issue)

  7. The crossing should've been removed & blocked after multiple vandalism. The penalties are small & enforcement poor. It is because people don't appreciate the risk of a train travelling at speed that accidents happen when animal or people get onto the line. My brother was a train driver and hit & killed a 4 year old girl that was part of a group of children playing on the railway: he had nightmares for years as he had 2 daughters of a similar age at the time.

  9. Never heard of this as it happened before I was born. I think it got overshadowed by both the Hither Green & Harrow & Wealdstone train crashes. Carriages "telescoping" remain a problem on the railways for a long time after this crash.

  10. Back then with steam trains, the vast majority of homes using coal to heat them & the Clean Air Act barely 18 month's old, fog was made worse & often turned into smog. It should be noted that BR was desperately short of money, it was having to pay compensation to the shareholders of the big 4 due to nationalisation, government were paying war debts & limiting borrowing. Then there was the temporary measure to build steam shutting locomotives as a stop gap before realising they had to switch to diesel; meaning that money was wasted. Add to that a fall in goods traffic & parcel service that was shifting toward road transport. This meant that upgrades to signals & train protection wasn't given the priority it needed as the vast majority of the budget was needed just to keep trains running.

  13. I remember this, the persistent fire and the damage to local properties. It is rarely good to jury rig a repair and then not test the system properly. It turned out to be a false economy not to shut down the plant and employ proper corrective action. £24 million was a lot of money back in 1974.

  23. PG&E the company keeps on giving, and not in a good way. They were behind the contamination featured in the film Erin Brockovich. It was also one of their poorly maintain pylons that caused a huge wildfire in California. Big companies in the USA will very often put profit before health & safety as that is weakly regulated & poorly enforced as the regulators, OSHA, after deliberately underfunded.

It was the Thatcher government that allowed the Rendering plants to reduce the temperature to save money that increased the risk of transmission of Scrapie into the cattle feed, as the lower temperature would not kill/ neutralise the prions. It is a pity that you also omitted that the bans on British beef have only recently been lifted in Australia & USA Thanks for the video, it is an important topic.

  38. Saving money is often the main priority, value for money & longevity of the work is mostly a low priority. I lived in a top floor low rise block in Hackney. I moved out as the council refused to fix the rook properly just patch repairs that didn't last. After the 3rd leak that spread to both the bedroom & living room where the ceiling collapsed as it was not rainwater but an overflowing water tank on the roof ( bad maintenance again). I managed to access the roof as vandals had broken the lock & turn the water off as the water didn't run into any drains but into my flat via a depression in the roof lower than the drains. I had to pay for the electric to run a dehumidifier for 2 weeks without compensation or a rent reduction before the ceiling was replaced. I knew it was only a matter of time before the leak into the flat happened again. The warm air central heating for the flat was expensive & inefficient. It was condemned as the massive 13Kw storage radiator had asbestos in it when the council again would pay to have it removed. Despite gas boilers being installed with radiators on the estate my phase had not been reach thus I had 3 brand new night storage radiators installed late December. In April they were removed & thrown in a skip as it was time for the new gas central heating to be installed. The waste, inefficiency, incompetence & corruption was widespread because the council knew it would always be re-elected. I moved to Westminster & saw the same attitudes & action repeated with immigrants being house in a tower block on the Harrow road that was declared unfit for human habitation due to asbestos. A homeless hostel was closed down due to disrepair & suddenly money was found for a redevelopment into gentrified flats for the wealthy.

  39.  @brianwelch1579 Given that the vast majority of prosecutions were done by the Post Office themselves to cover up the problem by not admitting to mistakes & bugs plus to recover "missing" money, there was obviously a conflict of interest. You can't blame the courts/judges because representative of Fujitsu & the Post Office lied under oath, withheld information and manipulated data to favour their case & to undermine the defence thus the judges were ignorant that they had been presented with a false version of the facts .

  41. As has been said before, the cost of an accident is always magnitudes more than fixing a problem. With the army corp of engineers working close by it seems very careless not to have 1 or 2 men controlling the much increased traffic over the crossing. A radio or some flags or temporary traffic lights in use doesn't exactly break the bank. On second thoughts this would appear to be a case of negligence and stupidity.

  42. Much like lithium batteries, oxygen generators are not the sort of cargo that should be sent by air. This was due to lack of training, lack of risk assessment, and jobs being done on the cheap by unqualified staff plus lack of proper oversight. Typical of the USA sadly.

The problem was not feeding animal protein to cows it was that the regulations had been altered to allow the temperature of the rendering to be reduced and not much was known about prions.

  47. I remember this. Many newspapers suggested suicide and latched on to the blood alcohol level to say he was drunk & his thermos was spiked with booze. A the driver was dead it was easy to blame him and not look at the inadequate protection provided by London Underground. I seem to recall that there were suggestions that the platform not be used due to the blind tunnel. Obviously the Tripcock wasn't far enough back to safely stop the train that wasn't already slowing down.. The history of British railways (in general not the company) has been a reactive one to crashes/disasters as when in private hands it was reluctant to spend money on safety measures, most often having to be forced to by new laws.

  48. This disaster was covered by another channel several month ago. Bad design, lacking safety features, very poor training, no proper redundancy i.e. 3 pumps, careless attitude to safety by management. How this ride was allowed to operate with so many flaws is damning.

  49. This started with the idiots that widened the road incorrectly & then more idiots not putting a better safety margin of more than a few seconds into the traffic lights to clear the road before the train arrived. it was negligence to design the junction & level crossing this way.
