(Shows pic of Van Ba) Me: hmm, Vietnamese? "He later went by Ho Chi Minh" Me, Vietnamese-American: π π π

I think your reasoning of why it's called "deviled" is most accurate out the bunch. It really is wicked how I can easily eat a whole platter of them but my limit is usually just 2 eggs in any other form π

I did read Beowulf in high school but it was one of the few required readings that everyone actually liked.

βΒ @leoribic1691Β her and Lady Catherine were the most snobbish as far as I recall. I remember Bingley as being nice to a fault.

Ngl, it does sound like it, esp the hopping from one house party to the next. It was definitely a shock for me when I went to my first frat party, and the grp I was with basically went from one fraternity to the next bc one was always starting when another died down. The only way I was able to get back to my dorm was by abandoning my grp to catch a ride with some dormmates I came across who were headed back. It was 4am by then, and I swore off ever going to another of these things.

Β @DISCUSSTINGΒ true~ I had a friend who plans out long holidays to indulge herself on dairy treats and have enough time to recover from it. She says no regrets every time π
15
Correct, "sugar" is just a nomenclature.

I remember being taught that it happened, but we never went into the details like we did with the world wars or the country's civil war. To my disappointment, the Vietnam War suffered the same treatment in my history classes too. It's the reason why my family even came to the US, so I was hoping for more than just a date to be mentioned about it.

β@chloebutler8438 idk abt back then, but nowadays, moral turpitude is included as one of the reasons to be denied/detained and that can cover a wide range of behaviors bc it's so loosely defined. It's largely used for basically anything that can be deemed offensive but not criminal.

Yes! A chocolate episode~ π«

I know I have memories from being 3, at the latest, bc my family moved to our permanent home when I was three but I have memories of the old house even though I've never revisited it.

Woo, so the hint was abt Madri Gras! Though, I was wrong abt you cooking a baby (King's Cake).
3
I question my decision for watching these before meal-times.

How interesting! I think there's a Vietnamese version of this that also adds in peanuts (tho, there's also a type that is just sesame) that I ate sometimes as a child. Can't remember what it was called, but it was rather chewy rather than purely crunchy from what I recall. But now, I want to eat it again π and try this recipe to taste the difference.

10:08 it's even wilder to me that your medieval lasagna video shows that the concept of eating by picking smt up with a stick was already known in the west but somehow the concept of using 2 sticks still was not.

βΒ @PirateQueen1720Β I'm surprised by the surprise. I wonder when and where this notion of etiquette in war came from.

Congrats on the 2M, Max!

3:50 atp, I keep thinking he's saying "knead" every time Max says "need" while he's kneading the pasta dough.

Is the link for "The Satyricon" under LINKS TO SOURCES correct? I clicked and it sent me to the Amazon page for Matiz Flor de Garum, so I don't think that's right. π€

Congratulations ππ₯³ for the new baby too! And happy holidays~

I grew up thinking of the candy as one of those grandparent candies (along with circus peanuts, caramel cubes, and those peppermint candies), but I also thought it was related to the baseball player too.

It's rather interesting abt how gruel has historic negative connotations, yet I believe that congee has a much better reputation in history in the east for many of the same reasons (being food that's largely connected with the sick and/or poor). I believe there was even a Chinese emperor who declared to have created congee in the first place, so maybe that played a role in its favorable reputation? But it's pretty much widely seen as a "good" dish basically anywhere in Asia (or at least, eastern Asia as far as I know). It's def the go-to dish in my family for anyone who's feeling under the weather.

Super helpful, thanks!

"It was your friends and neighbors putting you on trial..." At that point, not sure if we should be calling them friends. Neighbors... yeah, I could see that happening. Even today.

My mom's dog is so spoiled picky abt his food, that it's so hard to get him interested in dog food by itself. So, I've always wanted to try making smt like this to mix in and see if it gets him to be more receptive to his dog food.
1
Little disappointed that we didn't get to see any red foam around your mouth to make it seem like you drank blood, since you put in the achiote powder.

While I'm not the biggest jelly fan either, I do find Vietnamese grass jelly to be fascinating and like its sweet, mellow taste. And there's a lot of other Vietnamese desserts I really like that utilizes it too.
1
Love oysters. Raw with either lemon, salt, and pepper or lime, salt, and chili sauce is the best combo.

Kinda hilariously sad that the first I learned more abt the real Macbeth was through Disney's Gargoyles after having read the play π₯²

Hope he does a short to show us yhe roasted version.
1
So, you're saying I should just make this myself if I want to try it.
1
Omg, how have I never heard of this channel before? History AND food!? That's just beautiful~ Time to binge watch!
1
I haven't tried the deep dish style before, but I've been wanting to try Giordano's ever since I watched a clip of sm1 struggling with the cheese pull from there. Update Apr 2025: I'll be traveling through Chicago next month and am planning on visiting Giordano's for lunch. I'll finally get to try the deep dish :)

I almost thought that was just in my imagination, like how gas used to be less than $1 per gallon.
1
Oh, don't do this to me, Max. I won't be able to help myself and will over-indulge. Ah, it's too late now that I know the recipe.

Does anything sell for a penny anymore?
1
I had no idea Tang was that old.
1
It looks like a flat cinnabun to me (I'm eating a flat cinnabun while watching this, so I'm biased already).
1
Huh, didn't expect the pt.2 announcement with the U-boat.
1
I agree with Max on this. We should be given free cake for voting. This practice needs to come back as a norm.
1
Bok choy is the best.
1
"What were you doing at age 9?" asked Mr. Lemonade Stand on his mom's Apple II computer.

A rout sounds like smt only an extrovert would enjoy hosting.
1
And enjoy attending.

Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials ππΎπ₯π

I go straight to using a chocolate bar, but this is basically how I make the only type of hot chocolate I can like. I can't stand the powdered stuff.
1
It really looks more like a muffin.
1
Strawberry or peach desserts are my weaknesses. But cherries are my favorite fruit.
1
But wild strawberries are delicious.
