Regarding user evaluations of how likely they are to interact again with the social bot (for Alexa Challenge) I am curious how a distinction is made between users who are likely to interact again with the bot because they want to help it improve and potentially do better and those who are likely to interact with it again because they are happy now with the level of interaction/understanding it currently demonstrates.

I think about believing in a flat Earth as emerging from anti-globalism and a desire to return to a world view that pre-dates colonial imperialism (15th century or earlier)....the nationalism and xenophobia making our side (pun intended) all there is thereby psychologically negating the idea of globalism. I do not think of it in terms of a scientific theory that can be proved or disproved but as as a belief system that is held much like a religion and for similar purposes.

  32. to Lex's point about using something other than engagement as the metric for ad purposes which is a big way social networking is negative to people's well being and mental health one alternative metric could be completion of something you want to accomplish or reaching an expressed goal (personal, relationship, professional) so basically instead of optimizing eyeballs you are optimizing for getting shit done

  36. This is fascinating discussion and topic and extremely interesting. One thing I am concerned about though is that the metrics we are using to identify life-likely exoplanet candidates are based on our own known periodic table of elements and how science works with those and in our known experience in science....life could be other than what we are using to identify it. for example let's say life is paella. if we use just one recipe to search for paella in the universe we risk missing paella made from different ingredients.
