  6.  Eric Jones  I already answered some of your questions in another post. The problem with the Latin Americans is that they consider their Dark Skin Color as being Latin. They think that to be Latin you have to be dark or Mestizo looking and that Latin is their Ethnicity as the U.S. Census Bureau lists. Latin (Latino is incorrect in English) it's only about speaking Latin Languages and possessing Roman Latin Culture. People from Latin America keep saying " I'm Latin or in Spanish "Soy Latino, Soy Latina". This is wrong because we don't use "LATIN" as a personal identification. We use Latin only on occasions when we have to identify our culture. The right way would be I'm White, I'm Mixed Race, "I"m Indigenous..."I'm Mexican", I'm Cuban", "I'm Honduran" or "I'm Latin American" but NOT Latin, not Latino, not Latina and certainly not Latinx. Now if any of you feels that he/she has a Latin culture (The Latin Culture is the culture spread by the Romans) then he/she can say "I'm culturally Latin" or in Spanish " Tengo cultura Latina" but only then and not like all of you do. In fact the Italians and the Latin Europeans seldom use the term Latin unless they have to identify their culture.. They say White or Italian, French, Romanian, Portuguese and Spanish or just European. You have to blame Mexican Chicano Frank del Olmo who created this mess years ago. Frank del Olmo wanted to unite all the Spanish-speaking people of the Americas under one label but he chose the wrong "LATINO" label instead of choosing a Race for the Latin Americans or just say "Latin American/s". Latino is wrong in English you don't say Latino you say LATIN and wrong because Latin only refers to Languages and culture and has nothing to do with Race or Ethnicity. You just don't use Latin/Latino/Latina as a personal identification. You have to use your RACE or your Country of origin or say Latin American. I hope that I clarified the issue.

  29.  @rodrigobarreto1947  You are right. People from Brazil are Latin people. In Spanish language is Latinos/Latinas. However being Latin has nothing to do with Skin Color or Ethnicity. Being Latins means having inherited Roman Latin Languages and Roman Latin Culture. As I often explained the term Latin can only be used when one is asked bout what is his/her culture then they can say "I'm Latin" or "My culture is Latin" and not the way the people of Latin America use it. In all other instances one has to use the name of his/her country of origin for identification. For instance if a person is from Brazil he/she has to say "I'm Brazilian", or if it's from Mexico he/she has to say "I'm Mexican"... or if one wants to be known as a group the it's "I'm Latin American". Just to give you an idea. Take me for instance. I'm Italian and 100% Latin but if a person asks me who I am I don't say "I'm Latin" or in Italian "Sono Latino". No, I don't say so. I just say "I'm Italian" or "I'm European" But if a person asks me what is my culture then I say "I'm Latin/Sono Latino" but only if asked about my culture. Being Latins, as I said, means having inherited the Romance languages of the Romans, Having a Roman Latin Culture, coming from a country whose laws are based on Roman Laws and whose religion is Christian Catholic. I leave here a website where you can review the requirements to be considered Latins: Definitely Brazilians are Latin people. Don't let other people fool you. 35.  @LordDirus007  You are uneducated and make no sense. The Romans were all Italian and Latin before they started colonialism and went out of Italy towards the rest of Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East. They already were Latin and what made them Latin was their Latin Language, Latin Culture and Roman Laws. The fact that as they colonized they assimilated some other non-Italian groups did not influence that they were already Latin. Moreover, the people that you mention above where all of the same race, all European except for Northern Africans. The fact is that you mention Race. Race is not a factor in determining who is a Latin person and who is not. In order to be Latin a person must speak a Latin language: Italian, French, Romanian, Portuguese and Spanish, must have the Roman Latin Culture, coming from a Country whose laws are based on Roman Laws and whose Religion is Roman Catholicism. The problem with the people from Latin America is that they use the term Latin/Latino/Latina as either being their Race or their Skin Color or their DNA. This is not true. Latin (Latino is incorrect in English-correct way is Latin) only refers to first the Latin Language spoken by the Romans and two it refers to Romance Languages and three it refers to the Latin Culture of the Romans. Nothing to do with Skin Color or Race. Everything Latin be it the Latin people, the Latin Language and the Latin Culture all comes from Italy. The Romans spread it around Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East through colonialism and when centuries later the French, Portuguese and Spaniards came to the new world to colonize they spread the Latin Languages, Roman Culture, Roman Laws and Christian Catholicism throughout what is now known as the Americas. So to conclude it's not the race of a person which determines being Latin. Latin is a culture and cannot be used for personal identification like the Spanish-speaking people do. For personal identification people must use their Race, or Country of Origin like Mexican, Cuban...or say "Latin American/s" . This is what we all do. We don't identify using a culture. In fact even the Latin Europeans seldom use the term Latin. They use their Race which is White or almost always say Italian, French, Romanian, Portuguese and Spaniards or just say European. Latin is only used when in a discussion one has to identify his or her culture and only then. You from Latin America must do the same: Use your Race, individually, or say Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican or "Latin American/s. You use the terms Latin/Latino/Latina the wrong way. Blame Mexican Frank del Olmo because he created this identity problem for you., Please go through the website of the former LATIN UNION and see the requirements to be Latin and what it means to be a Latin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_Union

  37.  @lesterf9f115  Sorry but everything Latin, and whether you say Latino or Latina is the same thing, be it the Latin people, the Latin Language and the Latin culture all comes from Roman Italy. The Latin doesn't come from Spain and it doesn't come from what the French colonizers called "Amerique Latine" (Latin America) and Latin has only one meaning and whether in Spanish or any other language Latin can only have one meaning Latin is not a word. Latin is about Roman-Romance Languages and Roman Latin Culture. Nobody can give any other meaning. You only say that you are Latin when somebody ask your linguistic and cultural heritage then and only them you can say the "You're Latin" but culturally and not for personal identification. For personal identification you must say "I'm Mexican" if you come from Mexico" or "I'm Cuban" if you come from Cuba... or if you want to be known as part of a larger group then you say "I'm Latin American" in English. The terms Latin or Latino or Latina are not the same as "Latin American" because Latin means one thing and Latin American means another. Also there is no Latin Food, there is no Latin Music and there is no Latin Dance. It's all an invention. You must use the term Latin American/s to describe whatever you do. A person from Latin America is a Latin American, a person from Mexico is a Mexican. This is what we do in Latin Europe. We don't call ourselves Latins for personal identification. We say " I'm Italian" or "I'm French" or "I'm Romanian" or "I'm Portuguese" or I'm Spaniards" Only when we have to state our culture then we say for instance in Italian "Sono Latino/a" or "I'm culturally Latin", "Sono di cultura Latina". You use the term Latin/Latino/Latina as a Race or Ethnicity or Skin Color and this is not right. You have to use "Latin American".

  38.  @Anidem9  Yes, but if the term Mestizo is not to your liking and I may agree with it then it's up to each one of you from Latin America to choose an identity as long as Race is still a factor in identifying people. In the future Race may not be important and not easy to figure out due to the many racial mixing also for not dividing people. This is why when people originally from Latin America use the Latin/Latino/Latina label they are confusing the issue because we all identify ourselves by using either our Race or the countries we come from or we use our continent. As for Latin Europeans : Italians, French, Romanians, Portuguese and Spaniards they never use the Latin label as an identification because Latin is not their Race. Latin is only their linguistic and cultural heritage. However, if they happen to be in a conversation when they have to identify their culture then they say they're Latins but only then. In the Americas you use Latin/Latino/Latina to identify your Skin Color, to identify your DNA, to identify your Blood, to identify your Food, to identify your Music and this amounts to twisting Roman history. Latin is none of that. Latin/Latino/Latina is the language spoken by the Romans and their Latin Culture and cannot be changed no matter how much Mexican Frank del Olmo preferred "Latino" instead of "Latin Americans/s" in identifying the Spanish-speaking people of the Americas. He made a big mistake. You have to use a Race and for many of you can be different from the others depending on the Racial Mixing or you have to say Mexican, Cuba, Honduran, Puerto Rican... or you can say "Latin American/s". This is the way it is. Italians own the Latin, language and culture. It's our Roman Heritage. I leave you a link to the former LATIN UNION and you can see the requirement to be considered Latin and what Latin means. By the way it's LATIN in English and NOT Latino. Latino/Latina can only be said in Italian, Romanian, Portuguese and Spanish. LATIN UNION. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_Union

  45.  @juangomez1704  First of all it's Latin America in English and not Latina America. You're making the same mistake that Mexican Chicano Frank del Olmo did when he chose "Latino" instead of "Latin American" to identify the people from Latin America. Latino is incorrect in English-correct way is Latin singular and Latins plural. Ok, now to answer your question. Yes you are Latins but linguistically and culturally not so much but you are considered Latins in Latin America because of the following criteria: One: You speak Latin derived languages. TWO: You come from Countries whose laws are based on Roman Laws and whose religion is Roman Catholicism. HOWEVER: You use the terms Latin/Latino/Latina incorrectly. You use it for personal identification and for everything else that you do when for personal identification you must use the name of the country of your origin to identify yourselves like for instance if you are from Mexico you must say "I'm Mexican", if from Cuba you must say "I'm Cuban", just to give you an idea or if you want to be known as member of a larger group then you must say "I'm Latin American" in English. You use the terms Latin/Latino/Latina to identify you Ethnicity or Skin Color or DNA and you use it for everything and this is not right. You can use the terms: Latin/Latino/Latin ONLY if somebody asks you about your cultural background then you can say ""I' Latin ,or my culture is Latin. You have restaurants offering "Latin Food" when there is no such a thing. Actually there is not even a "Latin American Food" because the Mexicans eat different food from the Puerto Ricans etc., etc. and you have places offering "Latin Dance Instruction" when there is no Latin Dance. You use Latin incorrectly. This is called Cultural Appropriation and distortion of history and it's not acceptable. Remember: Latin is not a Skin Color like many of you believe. Latin is about Romance Languages and Roman Latin Culture and the Latins come from Italy, (Italia).

Latin is about Romance Languages and Roman Latin Culture and the Latins come from Italy. I want to add something else. It goes back to the Latin European colonizers: French, Portuguese and Spaniards. The French called that part of the Americas "LATIN" America (Amerique Latine) for a reason. Because they wanted to make a distinction between the Northern America that is now the USA which was English-speaking and Protestant with their America which was Latin speaking and Catholic and this is why they called it "Latin America" to differentiate between the two Americas.

  50. You are using the term Latino incorrectly. It's not your "native" heritage. It's the heritage of the Italians and of the Latin Europeans. Latino doesn't mean what you thing that it means. First of all Latino is incorrect in English-correct way is LATIN, secondly you are "Latin Americans". Blame Mexican Frank del Olmo. Frank del Olmo years ago wanted to unite all the Spanish-speaking people under one label and instead of choosing the correct way "Latin Americans" he chose "Latino" as an abbreviation for "Latin Americans" but he was wrong as you cannot abbreviate Latin American without giving it a different meaning. Latin/Latino only refers to Latin Languages (Romance Languages: Italian, French, Romanian, Portuguese and Spanish) and also refers to Roman Latin Culture and nothing else. No, Latin/Latino doesn't have anything to do with Skin Color, or Race, or DNA and there is no Latin food, there is no Latin Dance and there is no Latin Music. It's all an invention. Frank del Olmo fooled the U.S. Census Bureau into adopting the term Latino as an Ethnicity"!!! for the Spanish-speaking people. Wrong, wrong, wrong. If there are Ethnic Latins are the first Latins from Lazio, (Latium in Latin language) Italy. Stop the lies and learn what being a Latin really means and where this great language and culture come from. You can only use "Latin" in English or Latino/Latina in Italian, Romanian, Portuguese and Spanish languages only when you have to identify your culture and not the way the people from Latin America are doing. Totally wrong.
