  4. The point about Russian propaganda reinforcing the cracks between our various political groups is very interesting. The Greens were especially anti nuclear. Not just “ban the bomb” but the power plants as well. KGB funded the German and EU Greens leading to Germany closing its nuclear power plants. The spin-off was excessive regulatory control making power plants too expensive to build. As has especially happened in UK.

  16. I was going by a map showing Ukraine in early C20th. Ukraine did reach the Caspian though there was almost no coast line. They say the language was spoken right over to the Caspian. Obviously the Soviets quickly dealt with that issue.

  20. UK currently has a big problem with its unionised train drivers. They have extremely well paid, cushy jobs but they always want more. This coming week, they are using their political power to shut down the rail network. It will not be the last strike. Europe has (so far) managed to keep its public sector workers happy. But trains only work for the bulk distances. Busses are largely rubbish for local journeys and taxis are VERY expensive. Neither work for daily commutes. Now please remind me why I own a car?

  36. Russian oil and gas is extracted from tundra areas where the ground is permanently frozen. The petroleum products come out hot and keep the ground ice-free. When those wells are closed the pipes will get crushed by the ice. They can never be restarted. Russia has no intrinsic oil industry. They bought in the expertise from service companies such as Halliburton. They walked out leaving nobody to maintain the industry.

  38. Until this war, I was impressed with Marjorie Taylor Green. However her attitude over Ukraine is either incredibly duplicitous or incredibly stupid. The war was allowed to happen by Obama ignoring the Crimea annexation but also by Trump pretending that Ukraine doesn’t exist. Trump hit Putin’s forces (hard) in Syria - rightly so. But he did nothing to warn Putin off Ukraine when the direction of travel was obvious.

  39. What happens when Russian oil production collapses through lack of maintenance? The international contractors have walked out and Russia has nobody to do do the work. When oil and gas wells through permafrost go cold they get crushed. Those wells can never be used again.

  40. Operation Barbarossa failed for many reasons.  (1) Germany advanced on a front that was far too wide for them to cope with. Germany urgently needed oil from the Caucasus area. Anything north of Ukraine was no strategic benefit to Germany. Even Stalin was amazed at their folly.  (2) The Slavic Russian peasants hated Stalin with a vengeance but Nazis considered them sub-human. Unsurprisingly, they stuck with the devil they knew and sheer weight of numbers swamped the Nazis. (3) There are numerous other reasons including 2000 miles of supply lines that Germany could not support.
