  1. Tadpole trikes are so inherently stable the 2nd rear wheel is not needed. Power control into the front wheels allows them to help steering and braking. If you really can’t avoid gearing then go for epicyclic. They are compact and very efficient. I’m a fan of the Citroen hydro-pneumatic suspension. Compressed gas provides the springs. Hydraulics provide ride levelling with rapid response.

  2. Fine wires are ok but fractures happen at the connectors. You need hefty insulation for mechanical strength. Today’s electrical connectors are great at connecting but the failure points are where the wires exit.

  4. South West England has a few superchargers in the city of Bristol. The next facility is 80 miles away in Exeter. That’s it. 200 miles to the end of Cornwall nothing but “destination chargers” basically hotels with a three pin extension lead. Tesla needs to move on this issue. They have sold many cars down here and they need to haul a**.

  7. My son-in-law is a store manager at a large ASDA (part of Walmart). My wife picks for home delivery on night shifts. Both work extremely hard to keep us fed and supplied. Happy EASTER Everyone we will get through this.

  8. Why did Tesla not use the Citroen hydraulic system? Contrary to popular belief it was extremely reliable and a very efficient way of powering suspensions steering and brakes in the mist simple way. All it needs in an EV is electric power for the hydraulic pump.

  9. A bypass oil filter removes the wear inducing fine particles result is no need for low distance oil changes. I would have one on my car but the oil system has no reliable way to connect the filter.

  11. Why are manufacturers not using one motor per wheel? They would still need driveshafts but the final drive would be as simple as it gets. ABS/TCS would control wheel-spin just as it always does.

  13. Citroen DIRAVI was a hydraulic steering system that allowed the front wheels to be totally neutral geometry. There was no torque steer even if one side lost grip and potholes would not pull the car sideways. Although everything was done by hydraulics, automotive regulators demanded a mechanical rack & pinion. A variable steering angle was perfectly possible but the legally required rack & pinion put paid to the option.

  15. The possibility od swapping out the entire drive/suspension unit is all very well when the manufacturer allows the old unit to be repaired and reconditioned at sensible costs. Making it a throw-away part would be a severe backwards step.

  18. I don’t want to see Ford out of business but how are they to source enough batteries? Just as important, weight needs to be cut drastically and that parts bin engineering has to go.

  19. Back in the 1990s, the German motorcycle manufacturer MZ commissioned a British designer. He used three aluminium castings for steering and rear suspension mount joined with aluminium tubes bonded into the castings. The company welded the joints because they refused to believe the adhesive could do the job. They failed on costs but worse the welds caused the tubes to mis-align. Some welds cracked in use causing warranty problems. The company refused to consider new technology and went broke as a result.

  20. I have a 2007 Fiat with similar ideas on the front bumper panels. They are all fine, but broken clips on black trims would get refitted with acrylic sealant.

  21. Back in the 1990s, Ford had a three cylinder direct injection two stroke. It was clean, fuel efficient, powerful and needed a lot less maintenance. Unfortunately, some EU regulations (designed for four strokes) stopped it. This clanger would have been noted across the industry. Never rock the boat.

  23. That control box at 9:30 is likely to be another parts bin special. Ford purchasing won't source anything more suitable so the body engineers have to make a bracket. BUT - why is the control box not inside the front trunk area clipped to the scuttle??

  24. Ford should keep the "Mach-E" name but quietly drop "Mustang". The latter has far more value in sports cars and just adds "noise" to this SUV EV.

  25. The original MPV/Minivan was made by Matra Renault in 1984. It had a pressed steel space frame with plastic body panels. Over time they became more “normal” but at the same time got more boring with fewer sales. The Avantime of 2000 was an excellent spinoff spoiled by poor marketing. Those which remain today have a strong following of enthusiasts.

  26. The brushed motors used in corded power tools have an ac supply but the motor operated like a dc motor because rotor and stator are on the same line. Laminated cores are used to minimise eddy current losses. Efficiency is very poor.

  27. I hope you two can look at Richard Towns from the 1980s. He designed the Aston Martin Lagonda, but his Hustler range of modular kit cars could have been a game changer. Sadly, he's long gone but his cars had some very interesting ideas.

  29. I drive a Merc Vito van with robot clutch & gears auto transmission. It’s horrible incredibly slow from engine start even slower to get moving from park and the delay on putting the pedal down is 1 to 2 seconds. It’s all down to badly written code that goes back to zero every time you go into park and horrendous latency in the system.

  32. ICE cars cannot exist without a transmission and they are expensive to design and build. EVs can manage without accurate battery temperature control but its a big benefit to have it. Tesla is not spending on transmissions so it makes sense to spend on sophisticated cooling/heating controls.

  33. The big hit was the ultra low cost of petroleum and zero thoughts about pollution. When a gasoline car costs 1/10 of an electric and fuel is cheap, it’s obvious where things will go.

  34. The little plastic cover over the rear door manual release will get lost. It just will. Then coins and any other stuff will fall unto the door. Rattles will be annoying but paint damage internally risks a corrosion problem.

  35. I have a Fiat Panda (fore runner of Fiat 500). The cross car beam is a steel tube and bracketed structure between the A posts the dash is a plastic ps el over the top. Its incredibly solid but must cost a fortune to manufacture.

  36. The Delta Hawk two stroke diesel is an amazing engine. I’m sure too small for the SeaBee but the idea should be considered. The Zoche two stroke diesel from Germany is better still** but sadly the project ran out of money for homologation. ** 2.5 litre four cylinder 150 bhp or 5 litre eight cylinder 300 bhp. Zoche had a turbo blower driven by a ring gear which doubled as starter motor. It also had a normal turbo for charge air boosting. As with Delta Hawk there are no valves to seize, no fussy spark plugs, no carburettors and it runs on jet fuel.

  37. I feel it was a mistake for Tesla to use stainless in the CyberTruck body. It’s expensive heavy and will corrode less noble metals (almost all of them) that come into contact. I think folded aluminium sheets in the same design would have been less costly and more durable overall. But then, I’d have called it TeslaTruck. I like the alliteration. I’m sacked already

  40. A question about motors. Would three, six, nine and twelve pole motors work more efficiently that the three pole we see in current Teslas. (Gives different native rotation speeds for a given ac frequency).

  41. Sandy said some months ago that it’s all about commitment. Tesla are fully committed to EVs because that’s what they do. They have no legacy. The next biggest commitment I’d from Volkswagen who have to shake off their “dirty diesel” image. But even that are struggling without their own battery plants. Everyone else is last. Today he mentioned anchors in a storm. Big Auto is clinging to their anchors but the chains are going rusty.

  45. Rear view cameras really should be put at the top of the A pillar well away from accidental damage. Even on a small stalk they'd still be miles safer. If a kerb view is needed for parking, then fit another camera the wheel arch. They are cheap enough.

  48. Regarding the >100 bolts joining body to frame. It's no surprise. Way back in 2002, Audi had one bolt every 50mm (2") just to hold the dash into the body shell. The structure was extremely solid but so it should be. It's a significant cost in parts, assembly labour and weight.

  50. The original idea for CanBus was a power ring main with control data interlaced over the top. It’s the same idea as Ethernet over ac mains.
