When i found myself alone, without enough money to have light or heat and feeling hopeless, Professor Jordan Peterson helped me to " pull myself together" with that "make your bed" phrase. In a situation where i wasnt bothering to wash or clean my teeth daily, this one act that i made myself do every morning, brought me back to the land of the living. People dismiss it because they dont understand what it represents, its not just about being weak or strong, everybody has times when they are both. Its about what it represents. Often depressed people feel worthless or a failure, this something you do, not for anyone else, you do it for you. When going to bed at night instead of a rumpled mess, you see the neatly made bed that you made for yourself and it lifts you up. Its seems like a small thing, but it gives you a goal, small though it may be, it also helps you flex and grow or re-grow your self discipline and feel a small sense of achievement that you gradually extend on. One of my next challenges i gave myself to distract me from wallowing , was not to go to bed unless i had cleared my sink, going into the kitchen and not seeing it choked with dishes was so uplifting and i started to feel good about myself again. When you are emotionally beaten down these small victories are the path back to mental and emotional strength.
