The supposed inevitability of romantic subplots is the reason I couldn't get a girlfriend in high school. You can't reverse-engineer real life.

Glasgow built an underground first!

@Alusnovalotus One does not call a Pasadenan an LA native. Anyway the accent comes from the city's founders, who mostly came from around Lake Michigan.

Chicago is one of my favorite cities in America. Even though I only spent one weekend there, it was ridiculously friendly and happening. It was like everywhere was a party and everyone was invited. I have a cousin who is the last member of our family to live there (my grandpa grew up on the Near West Side and was a reserve player for the Blackhawks), and she refuses to move to Los Angeles because compared to Chicago it's too boring.

I live in Israel and got to meet a descendant of Daher Omar, one of the many, many local governors who revolted against the Ottomans in the 18th-19th centuries and established their own unrecognized pseudostates. Did a fine job running the place, much better than the Ottomans had been doing. His house is a hotel in Nazareth now. You should check it out if you're around there.

Greece in Hebrew is called "Yavan," from "Ionia." EDIT: Because Ionia and Judea were both part of the Persian Empire. It's kind of the mirror-image of where the name "Greece" comes from.

They say of the Acropolis where the Parthenon is that there are no straight lines.

Ah, the Hagia Sophia, made famous by being something Tom Scott didn’t know about!

That settles it. It’s been 20 years. I’m finally watching this tonight.

The slowness of the music is messing with my brain.

@sean668 It was never "Joisey," it was more like "juyzy," and was prominent among speakers born before 1920.

I struggle with localization just making videos about *actual history*. So far I've mostly used English names for ancient Jewish figures, but at some point in the Middle Ages I'll have to switch over to Hebrew or the local language just to keep from sounding odd.

How can you do a video on Wales without mentioning the traditional art of padlock folding, or padlockigami?

Cameron Roy I know, but it still sounds cool.

And of course the Louisiana Bubble was happening at the same time over in France.

*Judea was still nominally independent at this time.
