Conservative leaders care more about what the Guardian thinks of them than they do about their own voters
238
"prepared to" is code for "I wouldn't, but I'm going to tell these peasants I would, and then once I have their votes I go back to ignoring them."
120
I don't trust Boris or the Tories, but hopefully they will do it just out of electoral self interest.
94
Bunch of traitors
77
We need to defend democracy by stopping voters voting for parties we don't like.
71
The Conservatives care more about what the Guardian thinks about them than they do about the opinions of their own voters.
64
Then we should impose sanctions on them. Britain should be working to dismantle the EU.
51
Amazing that these people don't have any consideration of what conservative members or voters think
47
We all know how much the pledges of Tory leadership contenders are worth to Tory voters.
29
If we had a real independent foreign policy, we'd threaten to make a deal with the Russians. The EU would give us anything we wanted in five seconds flat. Unfortunately our leaders would never dare to play that tough, "use the leverage we have, oh no can't let the side down, wouldn't be the done thing old chap" etc.
26
Because a lot of this is really just anti-English sentiment ginned up by political opportunists not any kind of genuine nationalism. I don't want Scotland to leave but if a genuine Scottish nationalist party wanted actual independence and self government rather than running straight to the EU after leaving the UK, I would respect it.
24
It's not "out of touch" "former prime ministers", it's former Tory Prime Ministers who no longer need to win elections exposing their true colours, that they were never really conservative at all. Tony Blair and Gordon Brown are completely different, they arent "out of touch", they reflect the views of the typical Labour supporter by being pro EU etc.
23
This is actually a good move. We need an insurgency.
23
The UK needs to destroy the EU.
19
Why would he give concessions when he had the majority to get it through without their votes?
18
Again though, don't misdirect the blame on to Macron for doing what is in his country's interest, the real point is why is the British government letting him get away with it? It's always weak complaining while doing nothing. If he wants to play that game, what if the British government started putting convicts on boats and offering them their freedom if they go claim asylum in France? I imagine the French wouldn't just say "well, we have to take in anyone who gets into our waters on a boat, it's the law" would they?
15
No more EU would mean no need for a trade deal with the EU, if the UK had real leadership we would be encouraging Poland/Hungary etc to leave the EU.
14
Oh shut up, how brainwashed with neocon propaganda are you? Every conflict is not ww2, every leader we don't like is not Hitler.
14
So our choice is between "Britain is a multi ethnic failure" or "Britain is a multi ethnic success"? How about "who asked for it to be made multi ethnic in the first place?"
13
Yeah shame to see how many normally smart people are taken in by war propaganda. Russia was literally founded as "Kievan Rus", Kiev, the current capital of Ukraine, was the capital of Russia for centuries. We've been needling the Russians for years by trying to bring Ukraine under Western control, even though it's none of our business.
11
Maybe we shouldn't have declared all out economic war and tried to destroy Russia then?
11
As we leave the EU, the UK should be returning to its old foreign policy that it employed in previous centuries; our aim should be to prevent and undermine a centralised power on the continent of Europe, not support it as an "ally" as we are doing now. We should be working to undermine EU unity and encouraging nations like Poland and Hungary to leave the European Union by offering them close trade deals and British investment if they do. Our politicians are still stuck in the mindset of being turned into a province of the EU rather than pursuing an independent foreign policy in the national interest.
11
The party that presided over the highest immigration in history calling out the party that would allow even more. What a joke "democracy" is when these are our choices.
10
People might laugh but the fact is that re-centering the economy around shipping and trade would make total sense. The UK is an island, geographically located at the mid-point of world trade between Eurasia, Africa and the Americas, is already the centre of the global shipping insurance system and a financial hub, and has a powerful Navy. We could move back into shipbuilding, build massive megaports to rival and exceed the likes of Rotterdam, create our own cargo shipping lines etc, and increase the size of the Royal Navy to protect British flagged vessels globally.
9
Some globalist banker who probably supported Remain and is in favour of open borders etc. The Tories are bought and paid for agents of global finance, there's nothing conservative about them.
9
It's funny how the most dramatic policies of national government are basically excluded from democratic oversight.
9
If you want objective and fair comparisons and look at more than just tv, I looked at Socialblade statistics for Youtube, and GB News has about 1/10the number of subscribers of sky news, but already half as many monthly viewers. It's pretty obvious that it's in the ascendant. It's not remotely fair to compare GB News to a state funded broadcaster given vast amounts of taxpayer money each year.
9
Yep, because they aren't actually conservative.
8
So is this going to end now that we've left the EU?
8
These people act like this because they know the UK government would never leverage it's power over the US the same way for example Turkey has about Swedish and Finnish NATO membership.
8
What a moronic policy, vast majority of people don't need to study it beyond 16.
7
Lots of big talk from the Tories, how about they actually act?
7
HUUUUGE
6
My country isn't Israel
6
Yep, so incredibly obvious. Unfortunately a lot of people are stupid enough to fall for it.
5
The same leftist elites who use their BLM puppets to push to "defund the police" then hire private security forces to protect their own communities, while leaving ordinary decent people to the anarchy they've created.
5
Right, what good is there having a "conservative" party in power when they aren't conservative at all. And it's clear they're laying the ground for Rishi "diversity built Britain" Sunak to take over as Prime Minister.
5
How deluded do the Republicans have to be to think they can go back to a platform that is basically "really low taxes for corporations and open borders" and actually win elections?
5
Do you read your own comments? If you're actually serious start holding the Tories to account instead of uncritically repeating their talking points.
5
@yvetteloach8617 The Tories have literally let in millions of immigrants, And Boris has done nothing to change the highest level of immigration in history. People like you are tricked into thinking the Tory party is anything other than controlled opposition.
5
The Tories are the same as Labour lol, what's the point of "keeping Labour out" with a party that has identical policies to them?
5
yout get Labour by voting Tory anyway.
5
yep, the government likes to put out smug press releases about how they've deported "27 illegal immigrants", thinking people are so stupid that they don't know that that's totally irrelevant.
5
Yeah the uncritical cheerleading and treating Tory press releases as if they're actually honest reflections of government action is becoming a farce.
4
I didn't read the section on fishing quite like he did, it seemed to say we had the right to end EU access to our waters, but the EU would have the right to tax UK fish exports to the EU if we did.
4
The Tory government are globalist traitors and they need to be exposed for what they are to the public.
4
It's actually pathetic. We should be stopping every boat and immediately returning them to France. If France refuses to take them, they are admitting that they are intentionally allowing illegal immigration to the UK and we should close our borders to them and shift transport links to other countries.
4
Nexit
4
the high court cannot compel the government not to pass legislation, they are so dishonest.
4
What action lol, are they going to run to the "global court"? Who exactly do they think has the right to tell is what to do?
