The idea that banning guns is somehow "British culture" and we "don't have that history" is just total gaslighting based on the last few decades. I've seen climate change ideologues call this "implicit denialism" - I.e. even if you accept "The science" but dare to advocate for a different policy choice that weighs up the benefits of fossil fuels against the drawbacks, that's still "climate change denial". He could be right, but I don't agree with his fundamental premise and I think he is mistaken in assuming that bitcoin as base money (and crypto and defi providing the new equivalents of banks and stocks etc) would have the same issues as gold or other inelastic money. For example with defi and transparent on chain collateral requirements in bitcoin etc, you wouldn't have bank runs and unwillingness to lend etc where liquidity vanishes etc.

We're constantly taught things like "Hitler was trying to conquer the world" when it's perfectly clear from the Nazis own internal documents etc that the Germans did not want to invade and occupy Western Europe but did it to counter French and later British/American moves against them. The Germans plans for anyone who got in the way of their "Greater Germany" were pretty unpleasant, but that was it, the lies in the American and British media at the time (showing ridiculous things like how the Germans were planning to conquer America and planned to select "the finest American female specimens for their breeding programs" etc) were total nonsense. And those lies are still being repeated as the popular narrative.

Having a huge welfare state where the government does everything not public spiritedness, its anathema to it, because people just say "the government should do x, that's what I pay my taxes for". There is overwhelmingly more charity, volunteering, community organizations etc in the US than there is in continental Europe's welfare states.

  26. We had literally centuries before the welfare state in the West when the poor were not left to starve. Churches, charities etc. And that was when the West was at the higghest point of its relative power. If without the state the economy was now 2-3x as wealthy, charity would easily be providing for the poor. Also Danny was basically right, yes there's still some charity, but the state provably crowds out societal charity, since for example before WW2 charities used to provide many services that they no longer do because the government provides them.

And there's a difference between an elite that owns its own property, and an elite that functions by extracting rents from the property of those it rules. Bitcoin optimizes for security and reliability and scarcity, so it's the best store of value. But that security and reliability comes at the expense of for example speed.and composability.

If border controls were simply ended it would be over for the developed world instantly. People who talk about immigration from the third world as somehow being a charitable act have no idea of how small a dent even massive immigration would make in the numbers of the world's poor. By the end of the century there will be more Nigerians than Europeans, immigration to the West will achieve nothing but dragging it down to the level of the rest of the world. As Michael at least said, economies in the poorer parts of the world need to develop in order to help the populations of those places.
