  5. Unless there is a wide variance in the delivery of email notices at least 17 people disliked this before saw more than they saw the first 5 minutes. That says a lot about some very foolish people. This is a great presentation! She's a wonderful presenter who is dynamic and entertaining on what is a technically and socially complex topic. It's exciting to have and example of discrimination that, while unintended or even unconscious , is very real and has very concrete results. Thank you for sharing, TED.

  12. This is why big data is not science. Doing science requires reproducibility and replicability. That means publishing your calculations and data sets, methods and procedures. Big data is a black box with a Wizard of Oz behind the curtain.

  20. Noah you miss the point of the presentation slightly. The point is that even good people with no ill will can make choices that have differential effects. If the coders and scanners were aware of the lighting issue they would have made adjustments. But they didn't think to check. If you're in the biz then you know these kinds of oversights are rife in development. It's why we do phased releases and controlled testing.

  21. Not long ago there was a thing called an extended family. Several generations lived in one house and generations ttook care of each other. This is a part of what she is talking about. But her focus on employment sets the focus on upper middle class and higher families while cloaking the service rendered as a family function. I'm not sure I like the mixing. But she has an important message even so.

After reviewing all the criticism of this presentation, I'm surprised none of you reactionary status quo defenders picked up on the security risk posed by police and domestic security forces relying on faulty software to identify potential people of interest. I mean it's bad enough for overworked police to be wasting time processing people identified wrongly. But it's another thing entirely to miss the face of an actual terrorist, especially given the billions of dollars put into it. Why wouldn't you want to identify the root cause of the fault? Why wouldn't you want to fix it? Why wouldn't you want to prevent additional occurrences? You should be thanking Joy and rewarding her. But no. Enjoy your cognitive dissonance.

  25. This is amazing science. But it's application will need a much more sane world, or the technology will be corrupted. Maybe it will not matter in countries that have universal health care. But in countries such as the U.S. where care is a profit center, this personal information will be turned against individuals in order to save a buck. Or make two. For evidence, you don't need to look further than how insurance companies deny pre-existing conditions or make rates astronomical. Digital DNA is only a condition waiting to happen, or already happening.

  27. What a wonderful woman and stories! Wow! I guess she was born 1923 or so. It is hard to imagine the changes she's seen. I've recently reread Maya Angelou's "I know why the caged bird sings" and many of these stories put a voice to that experience. Perfect timing. Thanks for sharing!

  32. It strikes me that the new element to this is the direct dividends to the public, as opposed to feeding the public coffers. The most interesting part of that is the the simple allocation of the same amount to everyone. I can't imagine that getting through the US congress in one piece LoL

  37. I like her. She is fun and funny. But I disagree with her about the effect of cyber and social media on civility. There is plenty of uncivil behavior in cyber that you would never see face to face or where the shield of anonymity is gone. This in turn supports the division and hate. But her points about civility can be applied to this. Maybe there's hope.

  39. Infant nutrition and breast feeding are not woman's issues alone. These are human issues. All of us benefit from the proper nurture of all our children. Can anyone seriously argue otherwise? No. I think we also agree that the fundamentals supporting society are a part of the commons and should be supported by all. Roads, water, disease control, education, defense are ready examples. Health and welfare should be as well if we all benefit from them. Paid family leave, day care, and universal health care are as important as applying science to mother's milk. But mother's milk and infant nutrition are low hanging fruit. We can start there.
