  2. Arthur, personally I'm fine with it. Humor is a good way to break the ice and it makes a solid point. But it is a bit edgy. I have a hard time imagining my stats and math professors doing something like that in class lolol

  3. I was born and raised in Richmond, VA. I saw what she describes. I saw "white only" drinking fountains and bathrooms. I went to a public pook at age 10 with my best friend, a sweet black girl. She was not let in. My jr high and white and black drinking fountains set and inforced by the kids as set up by tradition going I don't know how far back. I remember going to the monument park and being very confused as to why traitor losers were being celebrated but there was no statue of any Nam protestor or of MLK. She speaks truth and all you knee jerk reactionairies need to shut up your inner ego and just listen. You are like little kids holding their breath until they turn blue so they on't have to hear want they don't want.

  4. In the future it will be astonishing that fathers and husbands would not want total equality for the female half of the family unit. Is fair play so hard to understand when it benefits your own family? It astonishes me now. But I do enjoy the triggered, knee-jerk, can-can of those particular males.

  13. I think it is often fear of change and losing status/power that causes this hate. It is not specifically directed at any one nationality or culture, but at those who are "strange" and different, and want "what is ours." Even whites have been the target of hate from other whites. Just look at the Catholic, the Irish, the Mormon, the atheist. Then there's the older European religious wars. Gotta hate those Cathars, those Lutherans, those Papists. And more. But this aside, the process presented here can work. Ironically, Turks and Iranians have thought of themselves as Caucasian too if I remember right.

  21. +MrLime This sounds like depression talking. Of course it's dangerous to make an evaluation from a single post, or even on line in general. But the way you feel and what you describe is not normal. I can speak from personal experience because I've been there too. It is from that place we share that I hope you will seek help. There is goodness for it's own sake. There is joy for others and pleasure in doing the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do. You can have that again.

But I will say that it's going to be a new world in which old political and economic theory no longer apply. When everyone from investment bankers to long haul truck drivers both face threats to their livelihood, notions of work and class have changed.

  28. This is an enlightening goal. I agree that access should be free, and with some training, members of the public could do real, useful work in many areas. They already do in disciplines that require field work. I'm not so sure about the translation side of things. I guess most areas of research can be translated for the public. But that is a skill in its own right. Very few of us are Sagans or Tysons. We would need to train people to do so. That's not a bad thing in a democracy.

  29. 360+ dislikes at this time, and I don't see a single qualitative criticism of merit. I would be a nice dinner that none of these people listened to the content, let alone watch the whole thing. What? Listen to facts? Oh my! Attend to an argument from facts? No not hardly. If so we'd see attentive and substantive discussion on topic. The closest I see to intelligent discussion refers to how women should be more like this than like those feminists. Well that's progress of sorts.

  32. King(x) I'm all for free speech. But there are limits. You don't shout fire in a theater for several reasons. So that establishes that that it's not an absolute right. In the same vein, the proliferation of trolls who only call people names and spew scat is not speech at all. People posting about turning off comments or social justice are not in that category. But it's often not relevant to the TED topic they post a comment on. It distracts from the subject matter and is rude to the presenter in the way that shouting fire or trolling are. This is TED's party and it seems to me they have the right to manage things. I suspect that if you reactionary folk were civil and made reasoned cases for your opinions that were on point then TED would welcome it. If you produced something then you'd have the same right and I hope would welcome civil, reasoned discussion.

  37. Franco, Mussolini and Hitler would be very comfortable with Trumps tactics to put us on the road to fascism. Attack institutions, threaten violence to those who disagree, deny the truth and replace it. Instill fear and loathing toward othrs who are different. I could go on. But yu get the idea.

  44. What a delightful and thoughtful presentation! While the issues she raises apply to all languages and writing systems, it is a treat to hear about them from another culture's perspective. I appreciate the translation to English or I might have had to skip the talk. I certainly would have lost the nuances of her speech. Well Done, TED!

  46. Scanning these negative comments just makes me sad that people can grow to adulthood and have such poor comprehension abilities. You miss the main message of the allegory, which is about the obligations of citizens in a democracy. The truths of the painter's time are still true today. Such blindness and parochialism, suggests a deep guilt and need to protect ego. Trump was used because he is topical and frankly does provide examples that are pertinent to the theme. But it could have been others in other times. You miss the glory and complex richness in the world when you cast it all in black and white.

  47. P. Peter That is an interesting perspective. I know there's some truth in it because I've seen it happen with family and friends. I would like to suggest that it's a bit heavy on the blame the victim side though. If patients got the information they needed, felt listened to and understood, they wouldn't be shopping the Internet in that way. Some would still use it. But they would go deep, to understand better, not wide. But I realize that doctors have little incentive to do that because it cuts into the wallet and the insurance companies won't correct that. This suggests to me that the root cause is a health care system that provides service for profit of the insurance companies. Making life and health profit centers might have been needed at some point. But now, with other options available, it is immoral. The U.S. should follow the rest of the developed world and move to a single payer system. It is past time to do so. The thrashing we see in even the single party control of the federal government is the death throws of the old system.

But safer from what? Troglodyte men? Actually it does not really matter. You are right. It is safer - thanks to work done by ranks of women and a few men.
