  5. Solitary Soul. Americans have been indoctrinated to fear communism and socialism. In the process they have heard that unions are the boogeyman. Never mind that almost all the benefit they enjoy came from the sweat and blood of unions advocating and educating. Never mind that the owners take advantage of many social benefits, rarely meeting their share of the costs. Military, police, sanitation and water, roads, education and more, are all supported by the commonweal. Society does benefit from it. I'm not saying it shouldn't be this way. I'm saying that we should recognize reality, even the socialist-fearing among us.

So how about we look at what TED itself has to say about its mission. "The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and more. " Seriously, now. You might not like what TED has to say. You might even make up a good argument for your position. You might even not watch and spare us your self-righteous tantrums. However, there is little excuse for stupidity and laziness that you exhibit. Bravo!

  9. I was born in Richmond VA in 1975, and I saw the leftovers of what she describes. White only fountains and restrooms. Segregated community swimming pools. Neighborhoods redlining affecting school demographics. Her use of the word "caste" is on the mark. Sadly, segregation continued in the north, even enforced by government at all levels, as documented in the book The Color of Law. We can be thankful that this created a critical mass that led to a community movement leading to the 1964 Civil Rights Act. This is a wonderful and inspiring presentation. Thanks for sharing!

  15. Bennet you are conflating bias in sampling (set and technique) with unjustly discriminatory bias. She clearly distinguishes the two. The first part explains how different factors went into sampling and skewed the data that the learning was based on. There are NO justice claims there. In the latter part she discusses the effects and talks about justice. She's one smart woman in a field where accuracy of analysis is critical. She's using words accordingly.

  19. Dataanti, maybe your point about lighting is sound. But it misses the point of the presentation slightly. The point is that even good people with no ill will can make choices that have differential effects. If the coders and scanners were aware of the lighting issue they would have made adjustments.

  24. This is really good news. In January I hit the 5 year mark for a leukemia I discovered at stage 4. I was lucky. I saw so many children at the clinic and in the hospital who were also dealing with late stage cancer. It breaks one's heart. Maybe these discoveries will prevent children from needing such harsh treatment. Thanks for sharing TED, and giving us hope.

  27. Bias in CS is well documented. The nerds might even be the worst. That is not really clear. It might simply be lack of social skills and ego protection not actual bias. One case that really struck me was a TED presentaton that talked about the failure of AI in facial recognition. It turned out the samples fed to the system by white males used predominantly white people. People of color, especially blacks and Austro-Micronesian, had features too extreme to fall into the algorithms. The selection bias in the sample set was not a conscious decision but it was bias.

  31. This is a lovely exposition on where the current growth model of capitalism has taken us, and what the future holds. And comments knee jerking in defense of the current system miss the point. No surprise at all. Raworth made the history of how we got here, just where "here" is, and where we are going unless we change as simple as possible. The doughnut model is brilliant. But some people will not see things in the light of day. They prefer to kick the table and shout meaningless platitudes in fear of change. Too bad for them. And too bad for us, who they will take down.

  34. They have touched on the modern fundamental contradiction of capitalism in the US. We are still a consumer based economy. But industry wants to cut costs and increase productivity by replacing people (consumers) with machines. Each company thinks if it converts first then they will maximize their profits on the backs of other companies while they still employ people. This is the modern tragedy of the commons. But the commons is working people and families. Henry Ford knew this. Too bad the panel did not delve deeply enough to offer even the hint of solutions. Otherwise I thought both offered very telling insights into how the US (and the west in general) has got to where we are. Thank you TED. Much to think about!

  35. Maybe if we don't take this step because a basic income is a right, we will do so out of economic necessity. Automation is quickly taking over ever more aspects of production and distribution. It won't be long before architects, engineers, doctors and lawyers can be replaced. But an inherent contradiction within capitalism is that the increase in efficiency eliminates the ability of consumers to pay for the very same goods and services. Doesn't a basic income become the only option? Let me rephrase that. It's the only viable option. Maybe you would wait for the economy to collapse, or for the people to rise up?

  36. +K Man I totally agree there is a cost to waiting, and it's a huge one. But we've seen a plethora of bad unintended consequences when we blindly move forward by focusing too narrowly. I've no clue what risks and probabilities there could be in releasing these mosquitoes. That doesn't bother me as much as my sense that no one else does either.Given that we can never undo the release, I think it prudent to dig in deeper. I'm not sure what to address, but I think you've adjusted to your main point, knee jerk dog barking about the free market and legislation determining who lives where. You need to read The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein. He covers the great migration of blacks to the north, something primarily due to Jim Crow. There were "Jim Crow" laws on the books that touched on tons of things up until the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Presently, you won't find deliberate discrimination like that taking place. So you are mostly right in saying discrimination doesn't play into who lives where. But you still have the legacy effects of it in housing and education.

  48. Jarful Sorry I wasn't clear. Low Income public housing projects are an administration's way of providing cheap housing to people at the bottom of the ladder. But you find poor in many different situations, such as rural fishing, lumber, agriculture too. There were claims going back to Jim Crow days that the residents of the projects were less "able" to participate in the economy and society. This may have been what we call dog whistle talk for racism. But they claimed objectivity in the observation. Anyway, some of the first mobility studies looked into these projects and then later compared the residents with poor elsewhere. They found no statistically significant difference in mobility relative to parents, based on the housing/life style. Of course, the projects were not created for the purposes of these tests. I didn't mean to imply that and should have been clear.
