Sacking them because their jobs no longer exist, is one thing, but sacking them to replace them with cheaper labour is illegal. They're going to get deservedly destroyed in court. <snip - just in> "P&O Ferries boss Peter Hebblethwaite has admitted to MPs that a decision to sack 800 workers last week without notice broke the law. He said there was "absolutely no doubt" that under UK employment law the firm was required to consult unions before making the mass cuts. However, he said no union would have accepted the plan and it was easier to compensate workers "in full" instead. The P&O boss also said he would make the same decision again if he had to."

She didn't "evade the FBI" ffs. She was living discreetly. They were aware of her location the entire time.

Ridiculous that a defeated president still has any power.
311
"No one is above the law" unless they are rich or connected.

So much respect for people who face their own imminent mortality with composure and then still find the heart to ask "What can I leave behind and how can I help others?"

That was the whole idea. Perhaps if these industries paid their staff a living wage, with full time contracts, sick pay and holidays, they'd find it easier to fill their vacancies. The irony of a Greek business owner complaining that there are not enough other foreigners coming to fill his minimum wage vacancies is not lost on me.

We should all be lucky enough to have a boss who cries at the thought of letting us go. Also, great to see the professionalism of those hospital staff.
137
Jeez calling David cameron evil and criticing the US bombing of Syria is the positon of every sane Briton isn't it?
133
Weird when you pay people a dog's wage on zero hours contracts, no holidays or sick pay, with terrms that suit only you, they're not interested in working for you. Especially when rents are high, and there's ahousing shortage. Funny that. :-/
126
"The government says they HAVE acted quickly." BS! They knew there was a driver shortage years ago. Covid and Brexit are exacerbating factors, but they should have attended to this years before Brexit. Every time I see Johnson's cretinous face, I wanna hit something.
116
Incredibly impressed. I didn't know the man was such a thinker. Would have liked more intelligence from the interviewer though.
114
How is this even a discussion? We stole them. We admit it. Give the fucking things back.
112
Yet Prince Andrew has been spending time on Epstein's paedo island. Nothing odd about this timing whatsoever. Nothing to see here. Just look the other way annnnd sleeep...

It's easy to go back and create a psychobabble history for someone once you have a personality profile to script for. If he joined ISIS and is now dead, good. He clearly was not a kingpin, but merely someone who spoke English well enough to communicate with the west. A far more important question is how was he recruited, and how did he contact the people that he went and joined.

If he'd done this nationwide in March, maybe we'd all be clear now. Weak, weak leadership. It's not all stupid haircuts and dangling off ropes.
90
It would have been nice if this discussion had acknowledged that sexual harassment, especially at the lower end of the scale, affects both sexes.
89
"Dyson has high standards in social responsibilities" which is why we shipped all manufacturing to a country that had worse labour protection and cheaper workers. Michelle Shi sounded like she was reading a hostage video.
88
Good for them.
86
Is ANYBODY really surprised that the nation that targeted children on the beach, schools and hospitals acting criminally? Now let's hear the Israel fanboys try to defend the country. Of course, with all those nukes paid for with American dollars, nobody will ever be held accountable.
83
2nd homes should be illegal all across Britain. In a nation with limited land and limited houses, rich bastards profiteering while others are so despearte is simply immoral.
79
The reason it produces leaders is because it makes cold hearted bastards who are not driven by human compassion. Julie Robinson is delusional if she thinks that better police checks and a childline poster on every dorm wall is fixing things. As Joy Schaverien said, there will ALWAYS be bullyingt in any situation where kids are away from adult supervision and if Robinson seriously thinks that kids going home for sunday lunch can compensate for all that trauma she's mental. Boarding schools are nothing but storage places where lazy parents place their kids until they are old enough to go to University.
74
"The taxpayer". Themselves you mean. Most of these people paid MANY times more into the system than they will draw out in 3 months.
73
Always makes you look innocent when you use technicalities to avoid trial and hide out in your multi-million pound royal house, using the British police to prevent papers being served against you. Andrew couldn't be more guilty if he tried.
70
They're acting smug that corporations finally get to pay 10% less than the average British worker. SMH.
62
So the most Catholic nation in the first world can manage to do it, by popular vote no less. and yet Americans are still spending millions to oppose it? Wonderful exceptionalism.
61
Take responsibility by quitting.
60
That's one down (although a shame he is so old before being sentenced). Now to get Netinyahu and Dick Cheney.
59
Gained a lot of respect for Eubank for his advice to his son here.
58
Good for India. There's no such thing as Islamophobia. Concerns about Islam are completely justified.
57
Totally unsurprised. No manager wants to put a promising up and comer against someone who has a serious chance of winning. I find something admirable about this guy's heart. Yes the punters kid themselves it's a fair fight, but they're probably the same people who thought WWE was true until their late teens. They get a show - they just don't realise that the outcome is predecided.
56
Politicians have learned that only the very few with principles are ever held accountable.
55
Nobody is listening to you any more Bozo. We know now that the rules mean nothing.
51
So bankers openly rob the entire nation and get a golden handshake. These villains only rob a few ultra rich jewellers and they get 400 years? So that's where our priorities lie. Not that it comes as any surprise.
50
Very kind of Europe to give us generous quotas. OF OUR OWN FISH!
48
How is this father not serving time?
47
So the government takes away people's ability to feed their children under force of law, then does nothing to feed them? C**ts.
47
It seems to me to be a total no-brainer. How any British institutions still have the moral timerity to hang onto stolen artefacts is beyond me.
47
The rich always continue to take their pound of flesh. There should have been a national freeze on ALL rents: private, commercial, and residential, AND all loan and mortgae repayments, from day one. Why should the wealthy get wealthier whilst sucking the working class dry?
44
These are not "mistakes" they're wilful flouting of the rules and wilful cover up. Get rid of Johnson now. Peter Bone is a good little flunky.
43
How is this news? We never recovered from 2008. At least a bunch of fat bankers didn't make off with my pension this time.
40
Civilian police officers should never be a thing. You're in uniform or you're not a police officer. They're bad enough behaved in uniform, let alone out.
40
The people who beat these non-violent folks for simply sitting in a restaurant or a bus should have spent the rest of their worthless lives in shame and misery.
37
As a plan to intimidate its enemies, this will go down as one of the greatest tactical missteps in military history alongside general Custer.
36
So they want Corbyn to come and lay a few sand bags? What's the man suppose to do? He's not in charge of the government FFS.
36
While we're talking war crimes, how about discussing Britain and the US's supply of weapons to the terrorist states of Saudi Arabia and Israel.
35
There is a suggestion on the Independent web site that this may have been an initiation. If so, the man needs to face some serious repercussions, and I don't care if Thais DO spend their time exploring the caves. A mile down wearing the gear they are wearing was a ludicrous risk to take. I'd think twice taking a group of boys that size for a walk in the forest on my own let alone somewhere so dangerous.
35
Well played Mervyn - refused to becajoled into reducing a complex issue into an either/or. He acklowdged wrong doing on both sides.
35
Beginnning to think that Russia is playing everyone and just likes being at the centre of a drama to give it some kind of leverage.
34
"I don't think it;s fair to make comparisons with countries (that has competent leaders) [because it shows off our ineptitude]."
34
We're recoinciled to the fact that you f**ked up massively and cost tens of thousands of lives, destroyed thousands of businesses and prolonged this MUCH longer than it needed to.
