Democracy: a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. The population vote for Congressional and presidential representation. We are a democracy. Saying that we are a republic doesn't change that we are also a democracy. These things are not mutually exclusive. Pointing out that the Constitution and the pledge calls us a republic changes nothing.

  38.  @dner75-xh9le  It's public knowledge. This whole crackdown is because Bukele declared a state of emergency. He has extended said state of emergency a dozen times. About 3 years ago Bukele marched the military into the legislature to force them to pass laws that he wanted. 2 years ago Bukele's allies in the judiciary changed the interpretation of the constitution to allow him to run another term, despite the law expressly forbidding it.

  41.  @ManUtd503  Whataboutisms don't make El Salvadore any better. By the numbers I posted over a quarter of the people arrested were innocent, most of them are still being held, and many could face longterm sentences due to plea deals or bias trials.

That leaves 13,000 innocent people in a country of just 6.3 million. It would be like the UK wrongfully imprisoning about 150,000 people, not including the 80,000 or so more that were recently released. Imagine the entire population of Luton getting falsely imprisoned. Bukele sounds good for anyone who doesn't have a decent education or a strong moral code.

  45.  @ManUtd503  El Salvador's homicide rate was dropping year over year long before Bukele was elected. I can compare populations, which was the point. Highest imprisonment rate in the world. Total police state. You can estimate all you want, you have to actually show it though, and as of yet those 20K people how no shown gang affiliations. You are just justifying arrests without due process. Diving people around isn't a crime.

  47.  @ManUtd503  You're confusing a police state with fear of the police. People have been so afraid for so long that the idea of the police violating human rights is seen as a necessary evil. That sentiment however won't last. It never does. It's not about profiling. People can be arrested from a simple phone call. One woman was arrested because her taxi driver didn't like that she was a lesbian, so he made up some story about her and got her imprisoned for months. Not to mention the potention for corruption among police. What's more likely, that the government mistakenly imprisoned and then released 7K people, some for upwards of a year, which is already a 10% failure rate for their crackdown, and there definitely aren't any more mistakenly arrested people even among people that have yet to see a courtroom. OR that human rights groups have a point when they've reviewed the prison populations and the claims being made and have estimated that thousands more are innocent? The sad part is that the language you are using is designed to dehumanise suspected criminals, which allows you to justify false imprisonment. It's a classic authoritarian way of thinking, and is common among people that don't understand the purpose of the justice system.

Aside from the fact that gang activity had been dropping for several years before Bukele, it doesn't change that they are still people deserving of rights. You are advocating for a dangerous precedent. This is "First They Came For" territory. No, the narrative is that thousands of innocent people have been arrested, which they have admitted is true, and many of them were arrested based on phone calls from random people lying about them, which is also true.

You are just stripping human rights away and ignoring the longterm humanitarian and democratic outcomes of that. Plenty of leaders used a situation to justify ignoring due process. It never turns out well.
