That South Africa diamond has a story to it. The kid picked it up and played with it because it was shiny. An Afrikaner offered to buy it, but the boy's mother was about to just let him have it. He had to inform them just how insanely valuable it was.

Caveat: Factories value diamonds according to hardness. Jewelers value diamonds according to shininess.

What people don't realize is that until the tech boom coding was not seen as a prestigious job, it was a technical vocation only a handful of people even knew the necessity of. That's why you see so many women coding early computers, because the men were typically building them and running the experiments on them.
40
Pinduoduo's ridiculous business model should have told everyone that it was just a passing trend like Fall Guys.
33
@georgeshapiro301 also a lesson in why Africa is poor
31
You should see all the firms that never had a chance but burned investor money anyway.
13
@AsbestosMuffins Why do the people that know the least about Africa have the most belligerent opinions about it?
9
By that logic, 99% of the developed world should be unemployed since most tasks have been automated over the past 200 years. No, increased automation means more production per worker. For instance, an American dairy farm has milking/feeding/cleaning robots that allows one farmer to do what use to take a dozen.
8
This is what happens when you try to manipulate nature. Does matter if it's reforestation, population control, or amping up production.
5
The fat profit margins are partially due to the high risk of diamond mining. Two men may mine the same mountain but one strike rich on day one but the other work for a year. But yeah, for most of its history, diamond monopolies have been legal.
5
The "non-profit" designation was likely tax evasion.
5
There's even analogue AI hardware. Analogue computers are much more efficient than digital, but one devise can only do exactly one task and must be rewired for any change. It takes an absurd amount of computing to train an AI to do anything but after training it'sa simple program, so a custom devise makes sense.

@uku4171 I assume he's American and is overly concerned about chips as a strategic material.
4
In many parts of Africa it never ended, they simply stopped calling them slaves. In Mauritania, for instance, an estimated 20% of the population are bonded labor and police will arrest escaped "employees" despite slavery being illegal. But as for these diamond mines these were simply grunt native labor and life in the mines paid better than farming and one successful score stealing a diamond was totally worth getting fired over.
4
There was a lot of hidden competition in departments and regions and a lot of weird microeconomies.
4
@wile123456 near all diamonds are purchased by men
4
If you could make a diamond you can make any gem. Also, common ugly diamonds are used in many industial cutting tools.
4
You can bet the farm these goons didn't tell their investors about double dipping on mortgages.
3
The majority of diamonds are used for industrial cutting tools, only the shiniest are put on women and rich chumps.
3
Were those the guys on Mythbusters debunking those "make your own diamond" videos?
3
@WiththegraceofgodHJ No one is sure who in the CCP was after him, but some people clearly envied his money.
3
@NielMalan I'm recalling a story I heard in childhood. Perhaps you're right.
3
Get creative when adorning your lover. Get her a tigerskin coat, a royal garmet in Africa.
3
@kalactose348 kinda wasteful when it comes down to it
3
If building a new factory is stealing, what does that make industrialization?
3
Ha. They banned opium, but that just means the army is the drug cartel
2
Jealous, much?
2
Most Iranians are rural ruled by Tehran in name only. It's more likely the numbers are total bullshit
2
That's silly. Society functioned for decades
2
I question your sanity
2
@kongbanana8947 they are ruled by a priest and grope anyone not wearing hijab
2
@Syrinx11 Hmm. I say the Germans flipped the pronunciations. (Sarcasm)
2
I forget where I read it, but the most appreciated gifts are often the ones difficult for the giver to obtain but of little monetary worth to the receiver. I.E. When Elon Musk realized he forgot to get his wife a Christmas gift, he is reported to have run out into the snow to gather flowers for her. I'm sure that move had more effect than a last minute expensive gift.
2
Arizona got really big rivers.
2
It may double in size also due to geopolitics, even if it ain't profitable. Don't bet on anything.
2
It's literally ruled by a Muslim priest and men are allowed to grope women.
2
These weren't slaves, but underpaid grunt labor. And yeah, theft is a big issue with diamonds in Africa because they all know just one successful score is worth getting fired over. Likewise, Jumia Technologies (the Amazon of Africa) reports that as much as 10% of profits are lost to petty theft and investors take it as simply an overhead cost.
2
They literally don't. Even guys who don't want kids will get them because they're unwilling to give up on sex. Things have to be bad enough people stop having sex
2
Vhut?
2
@rangergxi They're used in industrial cutting, especially stone cutting tools.
2
Monopolies in an industry which, at the time, consisted of a handful of corporate customers? Dude, these guys owned customers for the simple reason that software had to be custom made for each mainframe computer as each was unique at the time.
2
Finished diamonds are serialized, why?
2
@odaialzrigat your misconception comes from politics. China is the biggest SINGLE assebler of computers, Taiwan is the biggest SINGLE maker of chips, but there's all the above all over the world
2
@Restart313 Googling... Iraq's sits at 3.4 BPW as of 2022, just enough to maintain current populations. Africa's fertility rate has been falling since 1990 with many countries as low as Iraq with most of the extremely fertile countries having the highest child mortality rates and the lowest birth rate countries having issues similar to Iran's of broken global economies and wars with everybody. All of this can be ascribe to the population self-regulating its size
2
@shadrachemmanuel1720 Africa's fertility rate varies wildly, and the highest birth rates are in areas with zero modern medicine but slowing growing economies. There are Muslim countries with middling birth rates and falling populations
2
This isn't a people thing, this is an Urdu thing
2
Liar
1
Persian have to fight each other to survive
1
Corruption was not a factor
1
They literally weren't slaves, but grunt labor making more than they'd make farming. And yeah, theft is a big issue in any African company
