  1. The Dutch East India's quasi-governmental power wasn't unusual in Europe at the time, as it's true precursors were the trade unions/guilds. One of the larger guilds was the Hessian League in which most Baltic shipping companies were part of and had the largest fleet in that sea and a list of autonomous neighborhoods in various countries. What separates the Dutch East Indies is that both it was a nation sized league, and it was into the newly popularized stocks.

  16. "Swiss bank account" was synonymous with unregulated numbered accounts, but that's not just because of Credit Suisse. Switzerland the country has very strict privacy laws and there's only so much banks are allowed to tell you about customers.

  49.  @sweealamak628  in case you missed it, he ran a family office because he was banned from handling other people's money. His former clients appear to have earned money given no complaints from them and the growth of Hwang's account. Instead what you're looking at is a gambler's rationalization. Where in his mind the insane risk is ok because if he gets the dough he can do wonders for charity. More importantly, note his biggest expense was the money he gave to charity.

  50.  @sweealamak628  I'm not sure if you're refusing to here a kind word about Hwang because sour grapes, or you don't know how margin works. Of course these brokers lent him money, for the same reason Robinhood will lend literally anyone money. They retain the right to liquidate your positions at any time for any reason. SEC rules say you can only borrow twice what you invest with your own money, but Hedge Funds are exempt from that rule and borrow whatever the banks are willing to give (from twice, the 25 times as much as invested depending on what the strategy is).
