  8. A swap isn't imaginary. It's just an insane amount of leverage and you can lose more than your original investment. This is ok as long as position sizes are really small. That is exactly what Mr Hwang didn't do. The banks will give swaps because to them it's like a bond. They hold on to the shares, the investor covers any profit/loss, and they collect large fees. The investor will do it because the fees are far smaller than the cost of any stock option.

I saw one report they own crypto in order to sell cars with crypto, which is an accounting nightmare as their cash balance changes by the hour. It is also an insane amount of risk, a volatile startup relying on volatile currency, and there's tens of thousands of jobs on the line.
