  2. I'm getting a history PhD and I can say emphatically that you should never do this with the intent of making money. The only job that requires this degree is professor and you'll spend at least a hundred grand and years of hazing in grad school and have few if any job offers afterwards. There's still a steady stream of applicants because this job attracts egotistical bastards. Don't ask what I want to do with my degree. I cannot tell you.

  5. Another thing about British India is try as they might the Brits couldn't fully destroy the caste system. The Rajputs were the military caste and traditionally held a lot of power and refused to associate with other castes. The Brits didn't care and formed units from every caste, some of which were partially integrated with others. And since India is actually several countries forced into one colony, many unit recruitment were segregated on region as well. A system which continues even now.

  8. For the mystery third pocket. It may be that combat ready soldiers were so thinly dispersed and so disorganized that neither the Germans nor the Russians could tell where the German lines were. This isn't uncommon in these battles since throughout the war there were all kinds of unorganized pockets as reality never follows clean lines on a map. The 28th Jan offensive may have put a Russian unit between German units, but the German command didn't even notice.

I think it's a combination of the zero entry barrier, popularity contest, and anonymity that allows a tens of thousands teenagers and socialists to spam weird stuff and harass.   18. An extreme case of the representation problems you bring up is in Turkey, where elections are intentionally rigged in favor of the incumbent party. Most Turks vote for tiny parties, representing specific classes of persons and/or small communities. But the minimum threshold for getting a seat in Congress is high while the minimum threshold for forming a government is low. Meaning that small parties MUST ally with big parties or let their votes go to waste. And the incumbent has access to the censorship apparatus, appointment powers, and national budgets so they can easily bribe some parties and shut others up. Needless to say, every time an incumbent President dies there's a small war.

The university I briefly attended had internships pretty much mandatory and these firms usually hired the interns upon graduation. Few get prestigious positions like with NASA or Skunk Works, though.

  24. Yeah, that's usually how it goes. Namely because running entails serious losses in territory and in soldiers picked off in the back so once the fight starts it is usually best to keep fighting. Ergo, when armies do start running it is usually because they already are in a position to be slaughtered. An extreme of this was in Greek phalanx fights, where during the decisive push most of the injuries would be broken bones from two masses of humanity in a push-o-war. When one side fell over, which I mean literally, many would get trampled or knifed while still on the ground while the bulk of the losers would shed their now useless shields and run. Typical casualties for a 1000 v 1000 fight were like 10-20 dead for the winner and 100-200 dead for the loser along with a lot of equipment lost.

The German commanders drafted a great plan but didn't want to do it since they couldn't guarantee they could take the country before the Brits got there. Hitler himself took full responsibility for the decision to go forward and ergo he got full credit for the success even though none of his proposals made it into the final battle plan.

  33. About central banks making money off money printing: That's only more or less true. In the civilized world hotshots are SALLARIED, and the men printing bills don't set the budget. In the US, inflation is targeted at 1%-2% to keep people investing and spending rather than saving. Of course, there's a conflict of interest where inflation behaves like a tax while not appearing as so, leading to many historic instances of currency mismanagement (mostly during wartime).

They spend literal fortunes recruiting and paying professors and make it back by forcing students to buy new textbooks they likely won't read every year. I caused a stir in my teaching class because for a class on early American history I recommended The Beard's History of the US (written turn of the century).
