Here's a thought. Let's do an exchange program with other countries. For each person they send us who wants to be free of government intrusion and prefers honest work in the private sector to government care, we'll send them ten people who love socialism and hate America. Such a deal.

I learned more about John Quincy Adams in five minutes than was taught to me in all my history and civics classes.

"You were given the choice between war and dishonour. You chose dishonour, and you will have war." - Winston Churchill

I didn't realize until now that Biden had a role model.

“I have never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as a reason for withdrawing from a friend.” - Thomas Jefferson

I'm reminded of a scene in the movie EXODUS when nurse Kitty Fremont (played by Eva Marie Saint) falsely assumes British General Sutherland (played by Ralph Richardson) must be Jewish simply because he shows some compassion for the Israeli cause and people.

When I saw how differently Candace was dressed when she interviewed George Farmer, my first reaction was it seemed a bit provocative, then I thought perhaps this is her English fiance. It turns out my hunch was right. He appears to be a splendid chap, and she certainly is a lovely, intelligent young lady. I hope they have a long, loving, and fulfilling life together.

Wasn't introducing tobacco to the white man payback enough?

How does accurately predicting the election outcome warrant an FBI raid?

@willhiggins9563 We could have defeated, even captured North Vietnam at any point, but LBJ, the man who insisted we go into Vietnam in force, refused to take decisive action. Nixon inherited the mess LBJ created, but by this point the mood of the American public was swinging to somewhere between indifference and antagonism, rather like the feelings now about the war on terror. North Vietnam decided to play the waiting game at the Paris Peace meetings, but by late 1972 Nixon had had enough of it and launched Linebacker II which quickly broke the North. They very much feared an invasion was coming, so they sued for peace in earnest, and were amazed we settled for so little when victory was within our grasp.

@regularguy2807 Neither side engaged in the battle knew this, but it does not matter. The British forces were determined to seize New Orleans and control the entire Mississippi River. Had they succeeded in this mission and been been told of the treaty after the fact, do you think the British general would have ceded control back to the United States? No, he would have notified London of their new bargaining chip and recommended they use it to their full advantage, which I very strongly suspect the British government would have done.

Show me the child and I will find a problem.

@willhiggins9563 Try any well written history on the Vietnam War, but find the ones that focus on the politics more than the battles. One really good source I can recommend is FOUR STARS. There are several scholarly works put out by the DoD, such as THE EAGL'ES TALONS by Drew and Snow (Air University). If you want to read more personal accounts, try THUD RIDGE for a pilot's view of the early air war over North Vietam. I grew up during the war and have known a great many veterans who served and fought in it. To a man, they believed it was the politicians who held us back from winning it. I agree. This is why we should never enter into any conflict where don't have a clear intent to win, and win quickly because the American public are an impatient lot.

@insight1428 The economies and liberties of the USSR and Yugoslavia failed miserably. That's why neither country exists any longer. Free enterprise has advanced human knowledge and technology beyond anything ever imagined and brought much of the world out of abject poverty, no matter which metric you use. And it did it in less than 200 years. Free economies go through periods of highs and lows, but always the overall trend is upward. Government taxation, overspending, and meddling with economies is what brings about inflation and extends recessions and depressions longer than they should be.

We had a family friend who served as a Sherman tank commander in WWII and stayed in Germany after the war for about a year. He once told me the German economy was in such a shambles that the Reichsmark was nearly worthless and the Allied Military Currency was not trusted except as cigarette wrappers. As a result, the most popular and convenient trade currency on the black market was cigarettes. He didn't smoke, but his Army K-rations contained four cigarettes, so he saved them for barter with Germans and made out like a bandit.

When my wife had gestational diabetes during her pregnancy, the health care provider (TRICARE) informed us they would not pay for insulin treatment, but would pay to have her feet cut off if the situation got worse. Idiots.

The European use of the terms left-wing and right-wing do not translate well into the American use of these terms. Add to this the fact that both terms keep evolving/morphing over time, hence another danger of slapping a label on somebody.

I'll miss Otto. He always reminded me of Winston Churchill.

My Dad used to joke that life in Eastern Europe under Communism was so great, they had to build a wall to keep everybody else out.

I'm glad the officer recognized her mistake. Some don't and others will refuse to admit they are at fault and continue their fishing expedition in hopes of justifying the bad stop.

@darthvaderbro7210 If it is, the Progs should be all for it.

@insight1428 You mean reward countries such as Russia, N. Korea, and Iran for their bad behavior? No, reward comes after demonstrating good behavior, not before.
3
@insight1428 Name one country where socialism or communism has ever worked. It's not about being socialist or being an existential threat; it's about being evil. It doesn't matter if it is a person or a country. You should never reward bad behavior. Do that with a child and you will end up with rotten child. Do that with an oppressive regime and the people only suffer more while their leaders become wealthier. That's why Castro was able to die as one of the richest men in the world.
3
@insight1428 They don't exist anymore. Why is that?

The truth will set you free. Some people don't want to know the truth, so they don't want to be free.

Excellent point. It should be the sixth item on his list.

A dash camera or two is a great idea. Cops sometimes get angry when they see you recording with your phone. They may not notice the dash cam. If your window is only only enough to pass your papers through, they won't be able to reach in and grab it or shut it off. Ditto for your phone (unless that is where you store your proof of insurance).

I think the original saying is "No one on their deathbed said 'I wish I'd spent more time at the office'". This implies that we would prefer to spend as much time as possible with our families and friends, which can be viewed as another form of worthwhile work.

I think most people prefer a steady income to risk-taking and individual responsibility. Job statistics support my theory.

We have elected someone to the highest office in the land who does not give a damn. The yellow streak running down his backside is so wide it will serve as a beacon to every terrorist group and enemy we have that now is the time to hit America again. The next few years are going to be more dangerous than ever.

So the Whigs were the Libertarian party of their day.

@santeriberg8129 I knew somebody would try to make that inference.

Under some circumstances it is wise to consider a person's color, age, sex, hairstyle, tattoos, clothing, and behavior.

There's a whole lot more that needs to be covered here. The attitude and behavior of the officer may depend on the reason for the stop. A routine traffic stop should pose no serious problem, however if he believes this is a felony stop, he will draw his weapon and shout orders to you. Don't argue with him. Just do as he says even if it means being handcuffed and manhandled. Regardless of the reason for the stop, record it if possible. He may order you to stop recording, but such an order is unlawful. There are a few bad eggs in our police forces and these tend to be the ones who show up on YouTube videos. Don't encourage them by arguing or mouthing off even if they are doing so to you. Try to keep your cool and limit what information you provide them to that which is lawful and pertinent such as name, ID, proof of insurance, etc. You don't have to answer questions such as where you are going or do you know why I pulled you over. These are attempts to engage you in conversation to get your guard down so he can elicit information that could lead to your arrest or more citations. Never consent to a search of your vehicle, but don't physically resist him if searches anyway. You don't have to consent to a breathalyzer test, but understand failure to do will lead to your detainment and possible arrest.

As I recall, the agreement to remove occupation troops from the south was reached as part of a compromise to ensure Hayes would become President.

Ah, yes, Germany, where doctors believe an operation can be a technical success even if the patient dies.

In the 1960s we were taught the four food groups and the importance of a balanced diet. I still believe in this philosophy. My wife cannot tolerate many of the ingredients in processed foods so she reads the labels on everything we buy. It's shocking how few foods in the grocery store don't contain them or are loaded with cheap fillers. Most recently she discovered (in tiny letters) that Hellmann's Best Foods brand mayonnaise contains products from a "bio-engineered source". What the hell is that?
2
@insight1428 So their command driven form of society failed them.

Yep, definitely clear as mud.

Why wasn't he reelected?

My Dad was among the minority of voters who supported Nixon to the end. As he pointed out to me, first they had to get rid of Agnew before they could go after Nixon. Johnny Carson even joked that Nixon was safe as long as Agnew was VP.

@breathedeep2060 He's both.

It's so hard for these poor people to think rationally that it's actually funny. On the plus side, PragerU may have just come up with the perfect format for a new reality comedy series - "West Coast Wisdom".

@BifronsCandle Do all your pithy retorts come out of The Communist Manifesto?

Perhaps a good way to counter the evils of communism is to stop portraying Heaven as a utopian paradise. This is the same ideal promised by communists for the living world.
