  8. Yep, it's David Cameron's fault - cucking to the Lib Dems and introducing the Fixed Term Parliament Act. Here's what our cousins need to understand: when a government can't get things done, normally, instead of having to wait for the next election (as in the US), they will put it back to the people - hold a General Election. The FTPA has fundamentally broken the system - it changed one small part of a finely balanced system, which has caused the whole thing to seize-up; not because fixed-terms are bad, but because the REST of the system isn't built to cope with them...

Don't know where it comes from, but they seem to lose it when someone pulls a knife on them, but are able to handle having a gun stuck in their face... I'm guessing you've seen the embarrassing video out of New York cops, where the sandwich shop guy just takes the knife of the guy? He was Middle-Eastern, I think... Police in the US could definitely do with better training with respect to dealing with knives, but then, they could also do with being REQUIRED to wear body armour that was both bullet AND blade-rated. But, with all that said, a knife is a weapon. In the US, cops carry guns. Don't complain if you bring a weapon and someone else brings a better one - that's on you for being dumb.

  20.  @Eheroduelist  It's complicated. Boris has a common touch and Brexit Party is a real threat to Labour. There are no guarantees and certainly, if Boris betrays, the Conservative party is DONE, but I don't think that will happen. Boris is acting like a strong leader. For too long we've had weak leaders - politicians afraid to do what is "right" because it will upset people. People will vote for Boris on this basis, BUT it will be the last chance. Boris is quite literally our last, best hope for peace. We either get a new Conservative government AND Boris delivers a no-deal, or a deal that's obviously, unambiguously good (which I would rate as near impossible, due to EU politicians not knowing what's good for them...). We get that or we're looking at 1930's Germany; Civil War if we're lucky, an extremist government (left, right, up or down...) if we're not. THAT is how fundamentally broken the system is right now...

There is a VERY great difference in attitude between Britain (and those who have inherited Common Law principles) and the Continentals. I'm not saying we're beyond tyranny, but there is (was) something about Britons that made us better able to stave them off... Sargon does a much better job of delving into this than I could ever do, but I think it's basically to do with the Anglo-Saxon attitude of self-reliance and responsibility vs. the continental attitude of state power and control. It's also something that Niall Ferguson discusses in his work on why the West (English speaking world) is more "successful" than other (don't remember exact title). This has been fun 🙂

Action to assist the invasion is, therefore, by definition, Treason (even under the restricted definition in the US Constitution). An order to commit treason is an illegal order. Issuing an illegal order is grounds for court martial, even for the Commander-in-chief.

  46.  @alanpartridge2140  Given that the election is aimed at stopping the imposition of the law (using EMERGENCY legislation, which is only ever passed by concensus, but is now being passed by simple majority - and the Left have the stones to call Boris a tyrant!) which would make it illegal to leave the EU 'without a deal', he would HAVE to go to the Queen immediately. Once he goes to the Queen, the timetable is FIXED and there's no way to change it. Suggesting otherwise it's just plain wrong. If Boris loses the election Jeremy Corbyn would be PM on 16th, so he could just ASK for an extension. If Boris wins, he can just use emergency legislation, with a simple majority - after all, the precedent has been set - to undo the no deal bar and just take us out of the EU. No, this is cowardly hypocrisy, which is ultimately pointless, as it does nothing but undermine the protections built into the system and make us all more vulnerable to tyranny in the future. Well done to you.
