It has become obvious that protesting is not impossible in china so if the people really dont like the government then where are all the mass protests at? Despite everything china is clearly not as totalitarian as it used to be and the people are not doing anything against the government so the majority is clearly supportive of its actions.

  12. ​ @choncha23  they hardly have a reason to fight back tho. Just like the west, the chinese have promised their people long lasting economic growth. Thats where they get their legitimacy from. Thats where most systems get their legitimacy from. Either long lasting growth or long lasting peace or both. They are not blindly following anything simply because they dont share your deep seated distrust of authority. They have strong incentives to keep the system going. Thats why societies only start to crumble when they are unable to provide security and prosperity.

The rich are the winners, the poor are the losers and the middle class are the losers who think they are winners. These days the middle class is the biggest group of them which is why the establisments fears populism more than radicalism.

  34. If someone actually thinks that all money from lotteries goes towards funding schools then that just shows why they are poor in the first place. They are not just naive, they are stupid. You will have to pay for all the costs to set up the lottery. Most of the money will have to go to the prices (just in case someone wins). And then there will obviously be taxes. Having about a third of the money leftover to spend on schools and veterans is actually an achievement. I would call that "a good portion".

  39. I am VERY sceptic when it comes to doomsday predictions. Especially those saying that the world will end in 20/30ish years. You get a lot of support now but by the time it becomes clear that the prediction is false nobody will remember and you can make a new prediction. This is why I dont buy into all the drama around stopping climate change. Its a lot like a get-rich-quick sheme.
