  2. I am not American and can't understand why any state allows heavily armed protestors. At some stage I would suggest a shoot out will occur with very bad consequences just based on probability. There has already been a few killings by left and right leaning people at protests. The good thing about this group is they seem fractured and without any central leadership so any incident probably won't spread. I wish you the best.

Out of 50 million people on either side someone will disagree with everything down to the type of tie a president might wear and is it too dark or too light etc. etc. My observation from afar is this objection to many of Trumps behaviour s within the Republican Party is more wide spread and opposition more organized than the things you mentioned about previous presidents.

  10. What's with you people? This is not personal but you have exercised your freedom and are seeing the results. Australia lockdowns including interstate travel, opening up except for one infectious state where if you leave that state and come to my state 14 days lockdown in hotel at your expense. Until a state stops accepting outside infections you will never stop it in any state. Best of luck and it's every man and woman for themselves, protect your elderly and those with diabetes and those who are obese especially. Take care.

  11. I just love these socialist comments accusing the Democrats of not being as socialist as Trump. It's a complete laugh where I am standing and funny thing is it probably mostly comes from people who hate universal healthcare so much because it might be socialist they will pay higher taxes to make it happen. Public spending on healthcare in the US isn't actually low by world standards of comparative countries.

Actually you are wrong on 2 accounts, the US governments state and Federal spend more money on healthcare than the average total amount of OECD countries as a proportion of GDP , so if in dollars even worse. Military spending although fairly large I believe would be less than the healthcare spend especially this year with all the Covid 19 costs with testing and higher hospital costs with ppe etc. etc. I am Australian and our government spends a bit less on publically funded healthcare than the US I believe , especially this year , but we prefer a universal healthcare system run by government. We do have private healthcare if you want to jump a queue for elective surgery for example in a private hospital.

  13.  @yourlocalalexis4578  if you do a few internet searches if it is as per normal your state and federal government pays about 2 thirds of the healthcare bill. So not exactly a free market system and the services offered aren't universal.

  14.  @vbin9081  you do realise in a free market emergency care is a monopoly right, if you say oh there's this great little hospital in Alabama when you are in New York having a heart attack but every hospital charges double the rate of the lowest cost hospital which hospital will you choose? You also realise that if you go through private healthcare they don't care if all hospitals charge more and in fact profit off it because insurance is a commission business.

  15.  @vbin9081  I didn't say anything about Obamacare in fact I was criticising it because the conditions I describe are under Obama care. No country on the planet has managed to have cheap free market healthcare , it doesn't seem to be a possibility, just like you can't have free market roads because otherwise I could buy 5 metres of every road exiting a city and charge any vehicle $50 to pass and there would be nothing you can do about it. Some parts of healthcare can be free market but not emergency care and who pays for public health eg covid 19? With a free market system more deaths are more profitable and good for vaccine companies if the virus remains so no incentive for elimination.

Are you referring to medical tourism hospitals? Yes that's free market for non urgent procedures. See the US rating on the economic freedom index while it can't be described as low it isn't that high, my country Australia rates above the US. As far as limited socialism Australia isn't a bad model. If every country achieved what Australia has achieved there would be no need for a vaccine so the US failures have just made some companies some big healthcare money and your government is paying, not the free market.

The point about the US limited socialism model is it's directed more to corporations than it should be. As far as both of countries seeming to go down sort of an inevitable path of being more and more socialist , we only disagree in so far as I don't think it's inevitable but you seem to. We have to see over the next 10 years what happens, I am quietly confident Australia will generally stay on course but don't think it's a given. Some things do spill over from the US and UK to Australia but it's not always one direction, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia probably in that order are pushing a free trade agenda in our region and quite successfully actually, the TPP was most likely started by Singapore and or New Zealand as a trade grouping called P4 according to Wiki but with the US not wanting to join it still exists as CPTPP and Biden's apparently willing to consider it but will probably try to water it down a bit with too many conditions about workers and environment. It might be well meaning but truth is for poor countries to develop and get better incomes for their citizens the starting point by wealthy countries is very low but no trade they get nothing so even poorer. We will wait and see if the US joins and I hope it does. The approach our countries are taking is just keep putting more and more deals on top of each other, there are 4 different free trade deals with Australia and Singapore now as an example so it's really hard for any future government to get rid of 4 deals involving 20 countries give or take because 3 of the deals are multilateral. To give the US example Trump did threaten at one point to throw out our bilateral free trade agreement, however if we have a bilateral one and CPTPP it makes it twice as hard for the US to get out of Free trade with Australia.

Unless you're in Hawaii what you describe is all that you can really do. Hang in there the best you can.   21.  @0817sweetstacy  he didn't shut down travel, he stopped Chinese citizens entering while literally bringing back infected people with no monitoring or quarantine. Operation go slow with testing was a disaster with only 500 tests by the end of February versus 10,000 in Australia and something like 100,000 in South Korea. So complete failure. He also encouraged people to ignore the virus , gather in large groups packed closely together. It was absolute madness.

So Spain is Western according to what I think most people mean but not their ex colonies because they are poor. The geographic western and eastern is only Eurasia so the political definition is quite different.

  29. In low case jurisdictions you need to look at community transmission . I tried searching their numbers now but couldn't find it. Queensland Australia has had more imported cases than Taiwan with a population of only 5 million. We have however had 450 or so cases of community transmission which is much more than Taiwan. Masks made no difference in Taiwan that is really just an extra protection, like wearing a seatbelt when driving at 6 miles an hour already your chance of injury is small this is just an added precaution. You can't catch a virus that isn't there.

  30.  Mark Sebring  the official numbers are based on death certificates where covid 19 was a contributing factor as standard practice around the world. The CDC of USA doesn't have a section where it says bullet wound causing blood loss leading to death and died with covid 19. As much as political manipulation in the opposite direction might be occurring the death numbers are as accurate as they can be under the circumstances.

Why can't a somewhat authoritarian country institute appropriate restrictions for covid 19 and why are health thought crimes punished so hard but health violations that actually kill people not a single hard punishment? For anyone who can't work it out your country has the most in number and probably per capita drug user prisoners. So freedom to kill others due to what has often been referred to as rugged individualism AKA as selfish sociopathic behaviour but lock up someone who has in there possession a drug and possibly kill them with a virus as 1500 or so deaths in prison from covid 19 and no doubt at least one was a harmless health offender. Get your priorities straight Americans. The DC lockdown actually puts greater restrictions on residents than a proper covid 19 lockdown. What a joke everyone crying freedom and now all in favor of an authoritarian lockdown for yet another photo opportunity. Maybe Biden will help your country and lockdown to save lives though and maybe this lockdown is good , just pointing out 500,000 people dead because no proper health lockdown killed many through infection and maybe 150,000 through the failed lockdown lite. CDC reported 300,000 excess deaths from January 26 to October 3 and 200,000 were covid 19 and reasonable to say ineffective lockdown lite killed another 100,000 people, if trend has continued the number I suggested above is much lower than the real number.

Don't insult 15 year olds, vast majority have the capability to understand if you see images coming out of Wuhan with hospitals overflowing and serious lockdown measures it's certainly a high risk situation that won't go away. The early errors in January and February were shared by his team including Fauci who said on February 26 that the US was doing well because of a good healthcare system and contact tracing. At that point in time the US had already completely failed on its initial response and the "travel ban" was absolutely useless because the virus got in and was already rampant in New York in particular at the end of February. So I actually don't consider Trump to be responsible up to February 26, it's the actions or failing to act after that and recover the situation which is the true failure. State governors have a lot of responsibility also allowing every single state to have significant infections.

This has nothing to do with the Federal government. Without virtually stopping the virus from entering you can never contain it.

Read through many comments of Trump's hardline followers , they have no empathy because they still believe Trump and that he won't get sick according to Trump's words. So the bias cuts both ways.   40. Lots of authoritarians in the comment section, crack down on civil disobedience which affects nobody but the power of those that are planning a crackdown it would seem. I know being Australian your comeback will be cracking down in defence of our dear leaders is totally fine but freedom to infect must remain because that's our human rights. Pity about the human rights of the dead , because it's generally accepted that the first human right is life, but in a bipartisan fashion the US decided it would be too hard and the life issue isn't the most important. Anyway best of luck and just remember when the shoe is on the other foot and Democrats take power don't whinge and complain if they become authoritarian against you because it's what you wanted.

If the vaccine does increase your immunity that's better for society but on a personal level I expect you would be at very low risk of serious health consequences if you did already get it and caught it again a year later. Nobody knows how long immunity will last and how effective immunity might be accross all strains from a previous infection or any of the vaccines. Personally the Pfizer and Moderna ones scare me a bit, I would prefer other ones that don't make my cells do things. They say it's safe and maybe it is, just giving my personal fear, I am in Australia so different position and I am against our authorities giving emergency use , I think better for us to keep doing what we are doing until normal approval is given or at least wait a few months, the vaccines going out in large numbers now is the real test and time.
